We are getting some sort of rumour out here on Op Telic that the RAF is up for a massive change in the form of new wings. Is this true or is it an April Fools joke!!!!!!!

We heard of the one wing called the Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW). Sounds like what a donkey (EEEORRRR)

True or False

I haven't read all the bumff yet - but its more organizational changes and structure changes then anything. End of the day - you'll still be spannering.

As my old mate the Chief of Air Staff said
'

The formation of deployable Expeditionary Air Wings that will better support the RAF on deployed operations it is fitting that the changes being implemented across the Service, marked by today's ceremonies, will continue our drive towards maintaining outstanding operational capability and employing cutting edge technology in our Service."

"This restructuring is essential and will ensure we continue to deliver a highly capable, cost-efficient and powerful Air Force, capable of making a winning contribution both on operations and in humanitarian and relief operations."

"The result will be an even more flexible and adaptable Air Force, best organised to deal with the tasks it will face in the future.
These changes will bring into service one of the most potent aircraft that has ever flown and ensure we can give the best possible support to our people both on operations and at home, making a real and positive difference for us all."

Another great idea, I wonder if they have a QA cell, mind you i am not sure I like the Expeditionary bit, when I went to see the chief clerk to ask if that bit meant that if I applyed for EAW QA duties would i have to leave Wyton, he looked at me and said ' Get out of my office, I can't even be bothered to punch you in the face'

This was a welcome change as my face is still sore from last week.

A bit more info here:

From the Defence Net: Ref para 3c

The Defence White Paper, 'Delivering Security in a Changing World:
Future Capabilities' issued in July 2004, highlighted the need to modernise the UK's Armed Forces and to enhance their contribution to expeditionary operations.

2. Typhoon will provide a versatile multi-role capability that will replace the less-flexible single-role aircraft we operate today.
Equipped with a range of modern stand-off, precision weapons, these aircraft will provide much greater capability in all roles. Following the formation event at RAF Cottesmore today the squadron will be based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

3. Today's changes in detail:

a. RAF Coltishall in Norfolk will close as an operational flying station, and No. 6 Sqn's Jaguar aircraft will transfer to RAF Coningsby. No 41(F) Sqn will hand over its standard to the Fast Jet & Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit also based at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. This will mark the end of operational flying at RAF Coltishall, which is one of the last remaining Battle of Britain Fighter Units.

b. Simultaneously, RAF Stafford and RAF Sealand will close and their assets will transfer to the'hubs' at RAF Wittering and RAF Leeming.

c. Expeditionary Air Wings (EAW) are being established to support operations. Nine EAW will be formed at 9 Main Operation Bases - RAF Coningsby, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Kinloss, RAF Leeming, RAF Leuchars, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Lyneham, RAF Marham and RAF Waddington.

d. The Strike Command Headquarters is being streamlined from three RAF Groups to two, which will reduce management and administrative overheads and release more resources to the front line.

e. RAF Force Protection elements are being enhanced by integrating the RAF Regiment and the RAF Police to deliver a full range of capability from policing and security (including dogs) to close combat.

Now, I might be being a tad suspicious but does this sound like we could be moving towards a series of Wings as part of a larger UK Defence Force, rather than a stand alone Royal Air Force?

My understanding (probably wrong!) is that these Wgs are set up to create more of a 'Formed Unit' ethos on those stations. In theory, when one of the sqn's deploys on exercise/operations it will take chefs/clerks/MT/medics etc from it's own station (EAW) and therefore the same people will be used to dealing with each other etc.

Should also help resolve some of the sticky situations about sqn battle honours that occurred recently with the sqn's in theatre being made up of a few jets from 2 or 3 sqns based back in the UK.

The stations won't be getting renamed, as most of them will still have 'lodger units' and other bits and bobs that are not part of the EAW.

Just to repeat - this is MY understanding, not necessarily fact.

What's the point? If you ain't on a Sqn you're just a cling-on anyway!

Why is it, (not for the first time) the first place I hear about this is on this forum???

I am currently in the Sandpit, but surely there is a system in place to forward infomation??

Its all linked to the "plug and play" fwd/depth concept. Your fwd guys will deploy with the unit Sqns, the depth boys become the REMF's.

Oh and you get a new badge for your CS95 as well!

I've got more badges than Blue Peter at the moment!

Currently sporting 'Royal Air Force', Tac Flash, 90 Sig Unit Flash, Union Flag and the trusty old TCW rock dove!

Debating whether or not the Flt Sgt will see the funny side of '50m breast stroke' badge...

So where is the manpower coming from? This will just be a 4th (5th, 6th etc)Duty for people along the lines of the CRMS shambles. Sounds good in the house though!!

Lets face it guys in a couple of years with redundancies and JPA making us lose personnel we will be known as the RCAF (Royal Civilian Air Force)
