External Soundcard for playing music.

I'm after buying an external soundcard for my laptop to play music. It's for my bar in Greece so want it to be a good quality sound. At the moment I've got a lead from the headphone socket (laptop) into a graphic equaliser which then feeds into an analogue amp. The sound is just missing a certain something.

MP3 music lacks bass compared to playing CD's. I've just bought a sub woofer which has helped but not quite enough. A couple of questions then,

1. Is an external soundcard going to make a big difference and if so, which one? I've looked and the soundblaster range but the've had mixed reviews. I'm looking at up to a £100 for one.

2. is there anything else on the market which would help?

Any advice welome, I've trawled the net but struggling for a solution.

Cheers chaps.
