hey all,
I have tried the search but can't find much. As the title implies I am interested in a few roles but am keen to find out more about the general technician workshops. I have been comparing all the services and overall would really prefer to join the RAF. Have a cousin in there who loves it, although shes a lady and some kind of admin so cant really help me here.
I looked on the REME website and found the metalsmith trade which is apparently getting amalgamated with the shipwright role. That sounds perfect for me. I would love to make customer parts, do the welding and fitting and generally learn a real trade that i can take anywhere with me, while being in the forces (which i've always had a thing for). I'm sure you may just say that i should join the REME, but like i said the RAF really appeals and i was wondering if anyone has any experience with or is a gen tech workshop guy? I have looked at the training modules on the RAF site and i know welding, fabrication and general engineering principles are used but im not sure to what degree and if its to the same standard as an actual metalsmith in the REME? and is the trade dying as it seems, and how often are the intakes? i cant find much info other than on the RAF site. I am also wondering if anyone will suggest any other trades instead, vehicle mechanic being another i am interested in but i think i would prefer making things rather than fixing them.
Lastly, i am currently in New Zealand finishing a working holiday so i cant pop in to the AFCO to chat so spend my time researching my potential future from afar. My credit rating has dropped from fair to poor over the last few days due to a reworking of how it is calculated on experian. Does anyone know if this will affect me during application?
Thanks a ton in advance if anyone can shine a bit of light my way. have a good one.
