Hello All,
I am exploring the possibility of joining the RAF at the moment, possibly starting SERE next year. One question I can't find an answer to is what life is like for families. Is it manageable, is it horrific or does it really depend on the children you've got? Do families tend to move or do they stay in one place and you go see them at weekends? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Put some answers against the questions below as everyone is different:

What are you planning to do in the RAF?
What does your wife do or plan to do workwise?
How old are your kids?
Whats your present situation house wise? (to assess the shock factor of chopping across to service life)
Would your family follow you around or you work away during the week?
Are you prepared to live anywhere in the UK?
Have you been away from your family for extended periods of time before?
Is your wife quite independant?
If you were away and there was a family emergency do you think she would cope or fold?
Can she drive and can you afford to run two cars?

When you were going to apply for a commision

For an ex serviceman who has been RE-applying to join the RAF for the last 3 years, your questionsound a bit fishy to me......

Yep, fair enough it probably does sound a bit fishy. I was indeed a shiney and left in 2004 to go into church ministry. I was actually quite keen on being a padre then but you have to (as it turned out) have three years post-ordination experience after doing your degree. I did try to apply three years ago because my understanding was that you could apply two years into your three year ministerial probation. Turns out that wasn't true. So, I have now done four years in ministry and have now applied. So yes, I have been trying to join for a long time, but it is only now that I have fulfilled all the church requirements I can do so. Hope that explains why I am not fishing. BTW, I'm only trying to get an honest opinion here, perhaps that was a mistake.

What are you planning to do in the RAF? Chaplain
What does your wife do or plan to do workwise? Voluntary work
How old are your kids? 4yo, starting school September
Whats your present situation house wise? (to assess the shock factor of chopping across to service life) We own our own house
Would your family follow you around or you work away during the week? Not sure...
Are you prepared to live anywhere in the UK? Yes
Have you been away from your family for extended periods of time before? No
Is your wife quite independant? Yes
If you were away and there was a family emergency do you think she would cope or fold? Definitely cope
Can she drive and can you afford to run two cars? Yes, as we do now

Hope that helps! I think the question about coping is a good one!

Alepie, this forum is indeed full of peeps willing to offer their good advice. So it was not a mistake to come here. We are wary as we pay the utmost care to OPSEC and PERSEC as well as being on the alert for Journo's or idiots on a fishing trip.

I agree with you that the question Vim posed to coping, is a valid one. It will also be an area that you'll be very familiar with thanks to your experience with pastoral care, a skillset you'll not lose if you do join the mob again as a man with the direct line to him above.

Best of luck in your application chap!
