For some inexplicable reason, my A machine stopped talking to the 'net. Tests revealed that the B machine did, so my fears of a modem failure were groundless. I though that my now expired Norton subs had run out and screwed it, so I got shot of Norton AV.

After a lot of trouble, I found that the Firewall was jammed shut. I closed down Zone alarm and it all works. I'm so baffled I have had to resurect the standard Windows Firewall (better than nothing?).

Can someone give me a clue please ?

(Machine A is Athlon 3000, XP pro SP3, 1G Ram. Machine B is an HP Vectra, Win XP SP2 750K RAM. Both run Firefox.)

If you go to "Start" --> Settings --> Control Panel

Windows firewall should be in there. You should also be able to add exceptions to the firewall.

Had the same problem with Mrs Blanks PC and zone alarm mine was fine as always :)
if you go into the settings on zone alarm front page you may find that instead of medium the internet firewall is set to high........
its the page with two sliders on cant remember off top of head exactly which one without being infront of PC but i'm sure its main one
top slider needs to be on medium :)
job sorted for me took me 1/2 hour to spot it after schecking every setting against my machine

Just turn down your Zonealarm Firewall one notch from 'Stealth' and the problem is solved. Give it a few days and ZA should release a patch to enable you to go back into stealth mode.

You are still reasonable safe on the slightly lower setting.
