" No.2 Squadron Royal Flying Corps established the air station at Montrose to protect the Royal Navy."

Way back then we had the RFC protecting the Navy. Today with a Navy without any carrier borne fixed wing assets the protecting job falls to.........? and so the wheel turns

Didn't know the first military airbase was in sweaty land!

I hope you're not suggesting that the RAF is merely a pongo adjunct. Unlike the USAF, the RAF is a successor of both naval and military tradition. So at Montrose one part of the proto-RAF succeeded another, that's all. The subsequent founding of the FAA and the AAC does not alter that fact. :pirate:

No no and no again:PDT_Xtremez_32:. As the top service of the three the RAF is the adjunct of nobodies bunch of small brained, gun toting brown jobs nor a lacky of the rum, b*m and baccy boat drivers.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Until April 1st 2018 that is,:PDT_Xtremez_15:

I think its a rather dubious claim, seeing as CFS was founded at Upavon in 1912.

They could perhaps claim first OPERATIONAL airfield, ie there to counter a foe, but 'first military airbase in the UK' ... nopes.
Maybe Montrose was the first 'military only' air base and up until then they co-habited with civilians.

Here in New Zealand the Navy didn't stand up until 1942, the RNZAF was formed in 1937, which makes the fish-heads not the senior service. I have had great pleasure in ripping one out of the Navy, especially ex-Poms who transferred over from the RN who seem to get a right monk-on when you remind them. Mind you they still go ahead of us on parade, so some traditions have followed and remained.
