Bit of an odd question I know but can you be forced/told/ordered to hold a 600? Or is it the choice of the individual?

(pic post doesn't stipulate driving quals, and the RAF never paid for his civvy licence)

I would have liked everyone who had a driving licence to be issued with a 600. There are driving jobs that need doing and folks 'opting out' just places the burden on those that can be bothered.

No - especially if you don't have a civvy license (example follows).

Some dumb MT P&P knob at a secret ISTAR base in Lincolnshire required to inspect FMT600 of one of my SACs before signing part off his clearance certs prior to deploying to Bastion once. "I don't drive, not got a civvy licence, not got FMT600" my SAC said. "No checks mate, no signature!" enforces with some power glee dumb MT P&P knob states. Annoyingly I had to make a call to dumb MT P&P knob's SNCO to correct his jobsworth on the lack of common sense on his airman's part (FFS)!

If you get the RAF to put you through your DL do you not have to get a 600? MTTT&L at the soon to be only Scottish RAF base automatically give you one once you pass.

A 600 is a Q annotation against a particular post - if you get that post, holding it is compulsory (unless exceptionally waivered), otherwise you get one on a voluntary basis because it is convenient.

What about renewing your licence? £20 fee. If your post requires you to drive vehicles, should the RAF foot the fee for that?

Last year a few people in my trade got the fee paid for, but then a policy letter came out that yes, we drive vehicles, but the RAF were not going to pay for renewals anymore. So could you argue you will let your licence lapse and not drive?

Interesting point, and I would say yes, the service is liable to pay for you to renew, just as it is to renew passports, provided that your post is 600 Q annotated.

It used to be the case that the £20 renewal fee could be claimed back on JPA, but this was withdrawn wef 1 Sep 13 - even for MTDs!

It was only ever compulsory for an FMT600 to be held if the service had paid for the individual to learn to drive.

Why don't folks want to get a 600?

So they don't get asked to do the ****ty driving jobs. Though one lad tried that on me the other week.

"As we are done flying for the day and we don't need it, can you take this Crypto back to Com Cen?"

Lad doesn't even look up from his phone playing God knows what, before stating......

"It's raining"

"Take a vehicle" says I.

"Don't have a 600"

"You're going to get wet then, off you fook!"
