well today my son recieved his results and managed the following relevant exam resylts... Maths B, Science C, additional science B, ict 2 passes but sadly a D in english.
He so wants a career in the RAF but i'm unsure if i should take him to the AFCO or tell him to go to college and resit his english.....he got a grade D in higher english so does that equate to a foundation grade C? any advise will be gratefully recieved....btw he was looking at ASO as a trade.

Hi erindoors, Ive just finished a tour in recruiting so my advice would be, get him to re-sit his English. Not having English will restict his choices of trades greatly.
And his D in higher English is still only a D overall.
For the ASO trade, he would require English & Maths at Grade C.
I lost count of the amount of candidates who had a D in English or Maths and who regretted not doing a re-sit.

Tell him he done well, but realy the best option is to gain that 5 a*- c gcse's then alot of options will open up to him.

If people say it is getting to easy well stfu I saw 16 year olds break down over a peice of paper that could change there life and is that fare on someone ? :PDT_Xtremez_25:

Thank you Leckie you advise is very much appreciated and fully understandable.....this is the route i felt would benifit him most. he has real ability and in the current climate of recruiting he really needs to have something extra to show to the AFCO

Thank you Medic1. I have passed on your congratulations and i'm so hoping that he will resit his english asap. Its going to be so hard for him to be accepted what with the SDR etc.

Firstly congatulations to your son, my advice would be resit your english and do your A-levels as it will all help to getting in the RAF or getting a civvy job.

Well done to all those who got A*-C.

However, has anyone else noticed that the students who TV get to have their results given "live" on TV always seem to get 8/9/10 A's or A*? I've yet to see someone get 3 D's and 4 C's.

I was actually beginning to believe every child got 10 passes at A or A*...

Some kid on the radio yesterday reckoned he'd got 17 A* through to C...17!

Couldn't his parents afford him a bike?

Very true. But that's the way journalists pitch their story. Schools have a pretty good idea who their high scoring kids will be and, when the Daily DooDah calls, they make sure there aren't any nasty surprises on camera. There's not much media interest in a student who has a lot of difficulty, physical, mental, etc. but who works their socks off to get a D, E or F. One of my biggest triumphs was with such a student. He had been starved of oxygen during birth and had a list of problems as long as your arm, all of which could be traced back to this event. He got an E for me and as far as I was concerned, it was a solid gold A*.

Unfortunately, we also have a lot of kids, and parents, who see the headline and think that all they have to do is turn up on the day and pick up Grade C.

.....and a lot of schools where fear of OFSTED is so great that if a kid looks like he is even borderline, they won't even let them near the exam room door.

It's getting too easy.

Either that or it's easier to learn, i.e., the teaching methods are improving etc.

Have you got any examples to support your theory?

Year on year increase in pass rate, not one dip in 23 years!!!! Or are kids being born more brainy? The first I think.

Look at any new LAC on your section, bet you all think they're not up to scratch compared to when you joined up, but yet these are the kids that are leaving witn more qualifications so how can they be as thick as?

The standard of questions has not diminished. What has changed, is the preparation. All you have to do is look on t'internet and everything you need to know is there. The shelves of WH Smiths groan under the weight of revision guides, etc. Nevertheless, on the day of the exam, it's still comes down to you and a pencil. This question came up last year (June 2009) and it flashed me back to Cosford (circa 1971). Try it yourself under 'exam conditions'. You have 5 minutes to answer and show all your working out. By the way, calculators NOT allowed.

I take it you completely blew the English exam? Is English your second language ??

Um I got a C in my english :PDT_Xtremez_42:.
to answer the topic on the other page, the teacher have the results infrount of them and they pic the bright people to go on tv and radio not people who get 6 C's and a D:PDT_Xtremez_26:
