I hope the Goaters can help.

In addition to my laptop I have a desk top. The desk top however requires currently a fixed line to go on line.

What i would like to know is am i better off getting a new card to put in the unit ot a wireless router with adaptor i.e. a usb flash drive/stick.

Any assistance greatly received, thanks in advance

You wouldn't be better off per se, all it would do is reduce the cabling.

Unless you want to relocate the PC or the router, I wouldn't bother IMHO

All you would do is add a security hole and possibly downgrade the connections reliability. That said though, if you have a laptop I would have thought you are wireless on that meaning the router can be left alone. An internal wi-fi card can be found for sub £10, slap it in, most of the time windows would find the drivers and away you go.

If you've got a wifi router

If you've got a wifi router

If you've already got a wifi router then the cheapest solution is to plug a usb stick in the desk top, however, this will slow down your connection so unless you are doing it for a reason, move computer away from phone point or whatever, then just leave it plugged in.

You could also go down the home plug route but this would cost a little bit more.

Thanks for the responses. The reason for asking is due to having to re position the desk top and no convenient phone point and cabling is not an option.

I had to do the same when we moved to Coningsby so the router sits in the hallway whilst the laptop is wireless and the desktop upstairs is connected via a usb stick. Internet connection is fine for gaming and streaming video no problem.

I've had a similar problem since moving into one of the worlds smallest and most poorly equiped quarters down here at the West Midlands sausage factory. I would wholeheartedly recommend the homeplug option, they can be had reasonably cheaply and remove the potential security risks attached to wireless networking as well as being faster. I got mine from here

Just as an aside re reduction in speed, as your connection speed to the outside world won't exceed the speed of the wireless link I don't think you'll see much difference.

And as for security, encryption should be enough. You're more likely to click on a bad link and download something that way in which case a secure connection won't help.
