Hi folks.

Great to find this site. Found it through the Grays Lane Ashstead site.

I am ex-RAF 1966-1978. Was a shiney then remustered to Nurse. Spent my final years at RAF Hospital Ely and a field hospital in Salalah in the end days when the RAF left and took all the great cooks with them, and left us behind with a few Baluchies to cook up K-ration bangers and the like. When the mob left, we took over the sgts mess, better accommodation but we missed the cooks - they were brilliant.

Left the mob in 78 and worked for John Laing as an occupational health nurse, then as a medical rep for a few years. Finally ended up in social services as a residential care manager in Bury, Lancashire, and then a performance management officer after screwing up my brain.

Now retired, a bit early, but very welcome. Run the RAF Hospital Ely Association group, which can be found through the links directory on this site (left side menu). All ex-Elyites welcome.

Looking forward to plenty of chat and and opinion exchanges.

Take care out there
Roger

Thanks For The Welcome

Thanks For The Welcome

Hi Guys.

Thanks for the welcome, very nice of you.

I have been pounding through these threads, with my dear wife pulling her hair out that I have found something else to do with the RAF. She came later after many happy years and doesn't relate to the comradarie.

Reading how things are today, the mob seems to have got all technical, fit, fanatical about training in any way possible, and horror of horrors joined up with the bloody Army!

Oh those lazy, hazy days of yesteryear. 66 at Hereford for a year, yes I am an ex-apprentice brat - terrible station, hated every minute of it. Made up at Odiham, very lazy place indeed. Even though 38 Grouop HQ was there with the station, we had to have a parade one day for some visiting royalty. The officers had to dig out the manuals and sober up some of the SNCOs for a training day and then teach us how to wear a uniform PROPERLY.

Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, followed by Digby, just as sleepy, then Wyton and Ely hospital, with a trip to Salalah. What a wonderful time I had.

Left at just the right time. Sorry for the fellas still in it.

Take care out there
