Hi all,
I'm a bit of a ring-in here; I'm actually RAAF (for nearly 40 years), but have a great fondness for our UK cousins. I flew our Chinooks (before the Army took them) with three successive RAF exchange pilots many years ago - one of whom is very sadly no longer with us after an accident out here, and the other is now a 3 star (I think) running your personnel branch!
I started out as a maintainer of engines, flew as a loadmaster on Caribous, flew Chinook, CT4 Airtrainer and Caribou as a pilot and QFI, and a host of weird ground jobs in wonderful places, including PNG.
My wife and I have just had a month in the UK (my first visit) and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around East Kirkby, hanging over the fence at Coningsby (thanks to the BBMF for the Spitfire show on the Friday evening at the Petwood Hotel and the view of the Lancaster take-off on Sunday morning!), two days at Duxford (including staying purely by chance at the former O Mess in Duxford village), and RAF Hendon. For somebody who grew up with a very dog-eared copy of 'Reach for the Sky' and numerous other stirring WW2 tales, it was heady stuff! We'll be back for more with a much longer trip being planned as a retirement activity for 2013.
Looking forward to 'listening in'.
Regards,
DF
