Just a question for the HF oldies of the Trade.
Having loud conversations with current and ex members of the trade there seems to be an increase 1 ear deafness. Could this be due to 1 sided bakerlight headsets and many hours on the net during JMC or am I hearing things

Say again......................
sorry couldn't resist:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Wouldn't happen nowadays, bl00dy health and safety I tell you!! I've spent years of my life on HF sets and had perfect hearing today at my 35 year MOT.

Maybe JMCs contributed to me becoming a fat b'stard though!!

Hmmm, where's me claims form...

After years on JAWSC and HF crosstell followed by years in the air I can honestly say my hearing hasnt failed me a bit.....gain switch........!!!

You have to be practically deaf in one ear to be able to say that HF caused it. When I had my medical before leaving, although hearing was crap in one ear, it wasnt bad enough for the medical thingys to say here is a wodge of cash for spending your whole nightshift during JMC on HF!! Ah! Those were the days! Using NUCO and Namat to chat up the codgobs! Then getting a bollocking:PDT_Xtremez_31:

And what about going on day shift only to discover that you were the only HF-qualified bod that day so had to cover JMC and Shack flight following!!
:PDT_Xtremez_34:
I think it was around 1998/99 that Elf & Safety decided you could only spend 30 mins on HF then be off it for at least 1 hour. One Boss suggested 30 mins for one ear then 30 mins for the other. Hmmm...

Now the mention of the H+S in 98/99 must go to show that there is some relevance to all this. Not that they will admit that it is a trade related problem however, when questioned they say that they will look at each case on its own merit, tell that to the field gunners.::/:

i suffered with a hearing problem after 11yrs of using the old style plastic headset in the 60s,i applied for a hearing test to check how much hearing loss had occured and was given a tonal hearing test, which established a 20% loss.
when i started to get worse in the 80s i asked for another test and was given the tonal test again, only to be told the loss was only 8%,i knew that my hearing had got significently worse so i asked for a second opinion from a different specialist, who suggested a speech hearing test, this established a hearing loss in my right ear as 93% loss and my left ear 45% loss,i now wear 2 deaf aids.
dont be fobbed off with tonal hearing tests if you should have tinitus or suspected hearing loss through your work, insist on a speech hearing test as it is much more accurate.
