Hello all........again

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I'm returning to the goat after a prolonged abscence. So I thought I would re introduce myself. Former TG1 Rigger incase you didn't get that from the name. Left the RAF at the end of 2008, was contracting at Leuchars for a while until they disbanded 43sqn and binned all the civvies. Now a full time student, just coming to the end of my 3rd year of my Aircraft engineering BEng. I did tours at Kinloss, Akrotiri and Crash & Smash at Saints.

Hi there, noticed you ex rigger of more recent days, I'm starting with that trade in couple months and was just wondering if you could give me brief insight to the job, day to day stuff, travel, good/bad things etc cause only been able to get info from guys who served many a year ago and was looking for a more up to date insight on the role if you could? It would be a massive help cause there doesn't appear to be alot about it. Also courses/skills that you can acquire in the role.
Cheers.

Chris, just to let you know there are 2 trades known as riggers in the RAF.

The one I belong to (and the original poster) is a Trade Group 1 rigger. We fix aeroplanes. Our official title now is Aircraft Technician Mechanical.

The one that you wish to join is also called rigger but is in a different trade group (sorry can't remember off the top of my head!). As you are probably aware, your job will be to hang off very high things and fix the aerials/antennae/transmitters at the top of them! Your official title will be Aerial Erector.

Hope this helps
