Hi everyone
my name - well, my online pseudonym - is lesserweevil, or LW for short. I am 22 years old, and have always wanted to join the RAF. When I was 18, I got an information pack and... it never went further than that. My parents have never supported me on this career choice, so I went into commercial aviation rather than military.
However, here I am at 22, I am a qualified pilot, I have a job... but I still want to join the RAF. I know that the top age to join as a pilot is 23 (as far as I know) and so this is pretty much my last chance. If I don't do this now, I will regret not having tried for the rest of my life.
However, I'm not quite sure where to start. I have 3 main problems starting out
a) I am probably the most unfit person in the country - although i am not overweight, I do not do any type of physical exercise
b) I am not knowledgeable where current affairs are concerned
c) I'm a heck of a smartass
All 3 of these things I need to work on. Today I took the step of joining a gym, which I think is a good start.
Considering that I am starting from doing NOTHING in the way of PT - how long do you think it will take me to be ready? Should I apply now, and then train while waiting - or train and then apply?
I am double-guessing myself already - I really must not lose my motivation this time, I must actually DO this, or I am letting myself down.
Anyway... any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Especially to let me know more about what I need to do, what direction to point myself in, how to work on my 3-Items... etc
Thanks in advance!
LW

Joining a gym isn't a good start - going is!:PDT_Xtremez_30: At your age it shouldn't take long to get your fitness levels up as long as you persevere. You are young enough to be able to push your body a bit without fear of a heart attack or injury. I would say a month should get you fit enough so I would apply now.

As for being a smartass, that's a prerequisite for being a pilot anyway!

The question is, though, do I have to be an officer to be a pilot? Cause... my #1 aim in life is... to fly. I don't really care what rank I am as long as I get to fly... so... what's the story there?
LW

Dont you watch the adverts, you dont have to be a pilot to fly in the RAF.....

Welcome to e-goat mate there is loads of good gen on here so have a look round the recruitment forum.

My advice to you would be to stick at the gym. Going 3/4 times a week should have your fitness up there in 6 - 8 weeks no prob if you keep it up.

Start reading newspapers (and I dont mean the sun I mean the Times or the Telegraph etc etc) or if you dont manage to pick one up daily get The Week which does what it says on the tin. It is everything that has happened in the news that week all condensed down into one magazine. Go online to the BBC news as you can search through all the archives there and start finding out what is going on in the world.

Yes you have to be an officer to Pilot in the RAF but I would speak to the AFCO as it may (although I'm really not sure) make a difference if you already have your pilots licence.

Good luck mate I hope you get what you want!!

If rank truly isn't an issue, then there is always the Army Air Corp.

If flying is all that matters, it's an alternative.

That is true, however the RAF has always been my dream - I've never been interested in any of the other services. I'm just not quite sure at this stage how I would convince the RAF that I deserved a commission!
