Hello.

I've just registered here on E-Goat, largely because I was directed this way by a friend of mine who's also looking for a career in the RAF.

So here's some basic information about myself. I'm Seventeen years old, and I've had a good general interest in the RAF for at least the past ten years if not more. I blame this partly on how I was addicted to watching the Battle of Britain movie when I was little. Throw in Top Gun with that as well and I think you get a fine recipe for starting a Child's interest in aviation. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

Due to some rather personal family problems that had gone on over the past number of years, I ended up with no GCSEs at all. However, now that I've got out of that 'problematic spot' in my life I am focusing full efforts on finally getting those qualifications I should have and need for a career in the RAF. If all goes well, I should have what is needed to be eligible to apply for Mechanical Aircraft Technician.

Oh, I think it also is worth mentioning that I've been in the Air Training Corps as well and I certainly enjoy camping out in the wilderness among the various other activities that I enjoy.

Anyway, off to lurk some more I think. Cheerio. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Welcome to the Goat Rich. First of all, don’t worry about the GCSE screw up, I did the same with my O Levels, rode around on my scooter and went to the pictures instead of lessons and ended up with one O Level instead of 8. Still managed to end up with a career in the RAF for 28 years though.

You have picked the right trade; Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic is the first step to becoming an aircraft technician. Don’t let anybody talk you into becoming an armourer, there is no ejection seats or bombs on a helicopter, Tri-Star, Hercules, Nimrod, etc (I am no doubt going to get grief for that).

If you like camping then the Harrier world is a must for you. Anyway, have fun and you never know, we might meet one day in training. I will be the one with the Captain’s rank badges.

Cheers for the responses.

That's quite comforting to be know. Do you know if what is stated on the RAF website is a must for a trade (in terms of qualifications) or is it possible to still go in if you meet/surpass other criteria and give a good impression?

Because from what I have learnt about how things can operate in civvie life, is that even if you don't meet all the requirements listed for the qualifications you can still end up with the job/course.

Not being part of the RAF that deals with enlisting people, I would be loathe to give you information that may be false or out of date. My advice to you would be to go to your local Armed Forces Career Office (AFCO) and they will give you all the information you need.

One other point, if AMM is what you want and you have the qualifications for it, be careful that the AFCO do not try and talk you into something else you may regret taking at a later date.

Here’s a link to the AFCO site. Good luck.

And remember that maybe slightly more important than qualifications, is what you can bring to the party. Plenty of people I know have no O's or GCSE's, but are outstanding aircraft technicians. OTOH, some people I know have GCSE's, A's, BTEC etc, and are as much use as a nymphomaniac with herpes.

Thanks. I'll be heading down to the AFCO ASAP. I take it that the AFCO try and talk people into trades that are lacking and need places to be filled?

Forestfan, that is very pleasing to hear. So quite simply, it largely depends on how you present yourself and how well you can work as a team player and also how well you can work by yourself if need be?

That has always happened.

At the AFCO, be definite in what you want to do.
( IMHO 1. Pilot 2. Engineering 3. a trade 4. anything else - you have to plan for a short career these days so a transferrable skill is useful)

Don't let them talk you into something you don't want.

Leave the rest to your aptitude tests.

Be smart, punctual, attentive, and yourself.

Good luck.

welcome and good luck mate.

Don't be put off any trade simply by what you read on here. Armourer suited me and many like me very well and there is no need to fear what happens when you leave most of us do quite well. Have a good look at what is on offer and then go for it.
