When I try to connect to my wireless connection, I get a local network only, but if I connect via a cable, then it works as advertised with full internet accessibility. My wireless switch is on and I’ve had my wireless connection working previously.
I returned from OOA at the weekend, whilst away I was connected to the wireless internet with no problems, the problem only started upon my return.
I have run all the diagnostic checks (I think) that the comp promps me to do and I’ve been in contact with Orange (yes them!!) done their diagnostic checks and they claim the problem is mine, not their livebox (they would say that).
Within the next few days, I will try to connect to a mate’s wireless connection to see if it is me or them, but meanwhile, can anyone offer me any help?
I should add that I’m using Vista and I bought the laptop is about 2 months ago.

Many thanks

Check that the router hasn't been reset and has an old Key in it.
Connect the cable and type in the router address in internet explorer, you should be able to see all the settings.

Shug.

Open up a command line and type

ipconfig

Post a reply here with the result.

Can you Ping your router when connected via wireless?
Can you Ping Google.co.uk?

If you don't know how to ping, open up a command line and type;

ping www.google.co.uk
or
ping 192.168.0.1 (or your routers IP address)

then press enter.

Let us know any results.

I didn't know you could ping addresses with www. Cool!

How do I open up a command line?
I have opened it before, just can't remember right now.

I've been back on the phone to orange, because I did something and couldn't connect even through the cable, that is now sorted, but an engineer is going to call me (not holding my breath) about the wireless problem

Start -> Run -> cmd -> OK.

In vista

Hold shift, right click the desktop -> Open command line here.

Think I managed to open the command line,I typed ipconfig and got a load numbers, the following I think is in relation to wireless:-

Wireless LAN adaptor wireless network connections:
Connection-specific DNS suffix.:
Link-local IPv6 adress.:fe80::2426:ce7c:5acf:705c%11
IPv4 address.:192.168.1.135
Subnet mask.:255.255.255.0
Default gateway.:192.168.1.1

Did the ping www.google.co.uk
And I got Packets: sent 4, received 4, loss=0 (0%loss)
I did it again with my cable disconnected, got nothing!

Hope this is what was needed?

Tried that mate with the guys from Orange, they say that it was all in order.

Were you connected up via ethernet cable when you pinged or via wireless?

I don't have Vista myself but before we start going any further, do you have a firewall installed on your computer or are you using the built in Microsoft one?

If you temporarily disable the firewall, can you get access to the internet via wireless?

Just checking before we go rooting around any further.

Also, just wanted to make sure, does your Router have a firewall?

I pinged with the cable and wireless, I got 4 sent etc with the cable connected and nothing with wireless.
Firewalls, I’ve got the Microsoft one and it’s on, I have just disabled it and tried to connect via wireless, no joy.
Not sure about the router having a firewall, though I seem to remember Orange telling me it does have one.
r0jaws, thanks for the help.

Ok. Is your wireless icon in your start up tray indicating that you are connected to your router?

What happens when you connect to your router via wireless and you try;

ping 192.168.1.1

Do you lose any packets?

My wireless icon is stating local only.
When I connect wireless and ping 192.168.1.1, I have no losses, 4 sent, 4 received and 0 loss.

Ok, Please bear with me as this will be based primarily on XP and may be slightly different in Vista.

Find your Network Connections (in control panel hopefully) and right click on your wireless adapter and select Properties.

This should bring up a box where you can check your TCP/IP settings.

They will most likely be set on Automatic.

If possible I would like you to select Manual and enter the following into your boxes.

Ip Address: 192.168.1.18
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Server: 192.168.1.1

Click Apply, or Ok

open up your command line and type ipconfig again and check that your wireless setting reflect what you entered.
Try pinging first your router then, google as described before and see what happens. (ping www.google.co.uk)

I'm sorry mate but I have to bang out for the time being, I'll check on your progress in the morning, good luck.

Yes, it is late, cheers for the help, much appreciated. I'll give that a go in the morning and let you know.

No problem chap, If you have no luck with the above try changing the DNS to:

195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95 (add this as an alternative if there is space)

Then try again and see what happens.

Problem sorted, I went to change those settings as you said and noticed that my DNS wasn't set to auto, so I tried that 1st, and now it works! No idea how it changed, but it's sorted now!
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Nice one. That will explain why.
If you had your DNS set to anything other than your router or Orange's DNS' this would have been the result.
Glad to have been of help.
