Could be that the catalytic converter given up the ghost broken down inside blocking off the gasses causing loss of power and lumpy running or the casing has rotted through causing the same symptoms. The smell is a by-product of the cats operation and if the casing has cracked the smell would be more pronounced.

Hope This Helps.

Gotta be the Cat mate - and I don't mean you've run over next doors moggy!

As stated before, the Catalytic Converter seems to be knacked.

Yep, definitely sounds like the Cat.

Pricey too. Not what you need this time of year :S

its a 2001 kia shuma 1.6 petrol Vibration felt through the gear stick and exhaust is making a bit of noise though not as bad as when it blew on my old golf. Im going to have a look tommorrow when it light and i can get it jacked up.

ES,
1. With vibration in gearstick and sulphur smell, the cat seems to have copped it as a rsult of some other failure. Check engine / g/box mounts and also the drive train. (Drive shafte etc) - Sorry, can not remember how to PM. Mick

Sulphur Smell

Sulphur Smell

If you could smell sulphur when you opened the door, it's likely to be coming from the front of the car, not the back.

Sulphur smell is likely to be cooked off from Sulphuric Acid in the battery.
If your Alternator has gone TU or the battery is old, in this weather you're going to be making big demands on what is left of the battery (lights, heater etc)

If the electrolyte is low or frozen, then the battery is going to struggle and will give up the ghost.

I've seen a dead battery in a car get jump-started by a slave sat on the pavement, only for the slave to explode. All leads hooked up right, but after 2-3 seconds of power demand on the slave, it simply exploded! Plastic and acid all over my Dad & the 4 cars parked nearby which needed hosing off.

If you've got no electrics, you won't have any spark causing rough running (2 or 3 cylinders) and loss of power

A Battery is a lot cheaper than a cat, but an alterator can be cheap too - or pricey depending on the car.

A smell of sulphur would be from a nackered battery. It may also be you have a nacked HT lead or two leading to loss of power, that is if your CAT is ok. Any advice needed on vehicle electrics I will be happy to PM you. good luck

Had a look and as best as i can make out the exhaust looks fine, it does sound as if it is running rough,if it was running on just of couple of cylinders would that cause vibration? And also is it safe to drive to the garage (its only a mile away) or should i call out my breakdown service? Garage doesnt re-open till tomorrow anyway.

Thanks for all your input guys.

p.s the battery is only a year old.
