Hello everyone,

I found this forum through facebook last night and had a browse through. I found the information very useful and figured I had to be part of it. To give a bit of a background I am 23 years old. I left school after GCSE’s as I couldn’t wait to get out and start earning money. Since then I have gone from job to job never finding anything that has everything I am looking for. After 7 years I have decided enough is enough and have made a list of everything I enjoy in jobs and have been searching for a job that would satisfy it. I think I found it in the most unlikely place. I was never one to believe I would ever want to work in the armed forces, I think mostly out of naivety as I believed they just shot at people. It was only after looking at the websites for Army/Navy and RAF that my ears pricked up. Army was dismissed straight away yet the Navy and RAF ideas remained in my head. That interest grew and I ended up looking at the websites daily. Now I have decided I wish to join the RAF as WSOp and have my presentation on 9th May.

The more I read about the RAF the more I am interested and thus the more I want to read. After my initial AFCO interview I have been training daily (I was the most unfit guy you could meet and a chain smoker…which I am happy to say I have quit for 9 weeks now!) I am also reading as much as possible and trying to brush up on some maths equations (especially DST as I read they are used a lot from this site).

The biggest thing that has made me want to join is the constant challenge that there appears to be. Every job I have had so far has been boring and unchallenging once you know what you are doing. I believe the RAF will be different and keep me on my toes. I also like the idea of the comraderie and teamwork involved.

So yea that’s why I found the RAF and decided to apply (fingers crossed I am accepted). Now if you are still reading this and not bored yet I will let you know the kind of things I enjoy outside of work.

I used to be a dancer and am also part of an amateur dramatic group. I find most of my spare time I am actually studying one thing or another, as I love to be learning new things. Currently it’s the harmonica; previously I have tried my hand at guitar and used to play the trumpet. I come from quite a musical family with all of us being able to play at least 1 instrument to a standard.

I also enjoy (recently at least) keeping fit. I am surprised at how much better it makes you feel and how much more confident it makes you. I find myself looking forward to my next training session and love pushing myself to the limits each time.

Ok so that’s a hugely long introduction but at least if you managed to finish it you know my reasons for being on this forum.

Welcome and good luck with you presentation day.

Dont get too disheartened by the moaning all us older ones do, you'll be one of us one of these days if you get in!!

Welcome. I see you have read the recruiting forum...There's lots of advice but if you have questions, fire away!

Welcome to the forum Shrapnel! I made the huge mistake of leaving the RAF after just 6 years and, having realised how utterly w*nk civvy street is I'm joining up again next year. It's not what it used to be, having changed so much even in the short time I've been out and through seeing it all my life growing up as a scaley brat it has become continually worse but it's still (and I think will continue to be) head and shoulders above the monotony and idiocy unfortunately prevalent on civvy street.
Best of luck with the presentation,
Steve

A dancer and a budding thespian - am I correct in assuming you are a female?

hahah nope, just a 'comfortable in my sexuality' straight guy :) Both dancing and acting are great places to meet some really nice girls dontcha know :)

To be honest, everywhere is going down the pan, its not surprising the military is affected also. Every year you work harder for less and it sucks big time, but im no politician and just face the fact.

I would still keep it under your hat, during training at least.

Then when you go out one night and the girls are flocking around you your mates will appreciate these skills a lot more.

Hi shrapnel

Hi shrapnel

Hope you get want you want, stay for the big storey if you can, a lot of young people end up with loads of experience , but no pension, it`s very very important, believe me.

Welcome to the Goat from me.

If I get in, I can see me wanting to stay till the end :) I am looking for it as a career for life
