I am new to e-goat, I have only just turned 16 (not sitting my GCSE's until next year) but have applied to the RAF. I have have done the AST scored high and am applying for Aircraft Technician (Mechanical) I have my formal interview coming up on 6th October and am quite nervous as I have never been in an interview situation before and looking to see if anyone has any tips or advice. I have been training since the summer to improve my running, press ups etc. I am running at least 3 times a week on the road and one a week at the gym on a treadmill and am able to do the runs etc within the set time, but know that even if I pass the fitness test it will be hard to keep the fitness up or better it for joining next year after my GCSE's results are in. Oh and I have also applied to the Royal Navy as my second choice in case something goes drastically wrong with my exams, I have also passed the aptitude test for the Navy and have scored enough to apply for any trade, looking at submariner engineer, I have already been through my medical passed that and have my fitness test on 13th October, fitness test for the Navy is harder than RAF but I am getting there, after all that I am off to HMS Caledonia on 27th October for the navy Submariner acquaint course.

Has anyone else had experience of both services? If so which service would you choose and why?

i looking forward to hearing from anyone that can help and give advice.

Cheers

Obviously served in the RAF but whilst in spent most of my 25 years chasing submarines (with time spent with submariners talking tactics) and now I'm part of a huge team building them so work closely with submariners who help with the design. I also teach a product safety course with submariners so I guess I've listened to their 'dits' about life on board for some time.

They will tell you and I would agree that they are a very special breed. They are in short supply as many of the older ones retire and the new breed seem to get hacked off with life either at sea or on shore (depending on which one you talk to its either too much time away or too much time sat twiddling their thumbs in Faslane or Devonport).

Hot bedding, limited to so many words a week from family and friends via satcom, apparently often rubbish food, really confined spaces for sometimes months on end and you're at war the second you dive (the sea is trying to kill you 24/7).

Both services offer excellent training opportunities...but I can't help thinking that the life of a RAF engineer is a lot more palatable and pleasant than being stuck in a tube with 100 snoring farting men and no chance of any escape from it!

Thanks for the reply, have been torn in two lol one family is a ex submariner and 2 x ex RAF mechanics lol, but as I said think my first choice is RAF. would anyone have any tips for the RAF interview?

Hey, as said above I'd imagine life under water would be very difficult to adjust to in addition to the already challenging task of adapting to military life.

Have a good look around the forums for interview advice, I'm currently doing the same and there's some good info in the thread I made a week or so ago regardless of what your applying for.

Also a fair amount of things on YouTube that give a good insight into training and the recruitment process.

Good luck
