Hicks & Gillett Put Liverpool Up For Sale

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Fingers crossed for the future - some good comments on the 606 Forum.

Definitely think whoever comes in needs to make the new stadium the priority, larger crowds, more season ticket holder, more self-revenue.

Largely written this season off, especially regarding the CL. At least the opportunity of a fairly decent trophy is still there.

I paricularly like their quote about "growing he club" over the past 3 years; would that be the kind of growing that means no trophies, no new ground, new transfer budget and no CL next season.

Can't wait to get rid but I think their asking price of £500m is a tad excessive.

It is, based on the club's turnover £450 mill should be the very top end of the asking price. So don't expect this to be done quickly and cleanly, nothing ever is as far as those two are concerned. The fact that they are trying to wring that much more money out of their sale of the club, is typically in keeping with their greedy, mendacious nature. You don't get to become multi-millionaire businessmen by being charitable.

Do not want to wind up you Liverpool fans but be careful what you wish for, look at Portsmouth, different owner after different owner.

Just as an add on, your present incumbent manager has been given plenty of money to spend, he's just wasted it, really hope, if you can attract new owners, they decide to keep Benitez because as long as he's in charge you'll continue to be S**T.

Funcle - I will have to agree with the cash that Benitez has wasted on some very average players.

I think the yanks have supported him to that extent but it the fact we have not been able to compete on the transfer front due to the amount of debt they suddenly dumped on the club.

I think new owners will be good for the club as the current pair do not get on and that does not work well for a good business. This new chairman Broughton seems to be talking a good game already and appears that he is going to conduct all talks behind the scenes which can't be said has happened lately with everything in the media. I guess will will just have to give him the time he asks for and trust that he will deliver.

I also have written off this season, Europa league trophy would be nice but it has been an awful season and one i did not expect after last years finish. Lets hope for a better season 10/11

Agree with you about Benitez, he has had his chances and plenty of money to spend and most of it not wisely.
If we do get a new manager whoever it is (mourinio ? o'neil ?) they will not be able to do a lot untill this mess is sorted. Lets hope there is someone out there with the cash and more importantly that they may actually be interested in the club.
After being optimistic at the start of the season, it really has fallen apart big time. Whatever is said about things off the pitch not affecting the players is clearly b*llox, allthough they must take some of the blame.

A sentiment echoed by dozens of clubs and their supporters.

As an Accy Stanley fan what happens in the rarified atmosphere of the premier league hardly effects me, but a better Liverpool team can only be good for football as a whole. It means there is one less chance of the taggerts scumbags winning the title.

Aye - must confess to not being one of the "In Rafa we trust" brigade.

Don't get me wrong, it is suberb that we do not castigate and hound him out of Anfield, but it has been clear from watching that there is a load of spirit missing - can it all be down to the fact that Alonso was sold?

Bar him the nucleus of the side is still intact only a year older. Point of example was a few weeks ago - watched the first leg of the Arsenal-Barcelona game and what a sight Barcelona was - now skip to the next night and the first leg of the Benfica game - spot the difference?

Ideally - would like to have O'Neill over anyone else - if the club can get some clear direction, a fresh sense of optimism and a decent transfer kitty - I think that we will be great (well greater than now) again.

ps - would also not mind Agbonlahor alongside Torres and Ashley Young on the wing and Dunne alongside Carra

In Rafa We Trust?

In Rafa We Trust?

It's easy to turn round and say 'get rid of Benitez and bring in O'Neill/Mourinho/whoever' but there are several points that need to be factored in first:

1) Benitez is on a contract until 2014 - four more seasons. To get rid of him, the club will have to pay out a massive amount of compensation. Are we really in a position financially to be able to meet that compensation package?

2) O'Neill, Mourinho and all of the others who have been linked to the post are all in contract. This would mean an equally massive compensation sum to the losing club as well as an increased wage package to the new manager to make coming to us more attractive.

3) We are hugely in debt, meaning that a new manager will not get any kind of proper buying power to rebuild a team capable of getting back to speed. No manager worth their salt nowadays, and especially the likes of Mourinho, will want to leave their current situation and come to a club where their hands will be tied behind their back almost immediately.

Admittedly, I was/am a member of the 'In Rafa We Trust' brigade, though this year my patience has been severely tested. Taking these factors into account, especially the third one, are we in a position to realistically seek a new manager? In an ideal world, I would like to think that the third factor wouldn't come into play as a new manager of the quality akin to those mentioned above would have the leadership, skill and all-round cajones to get a grip of the club and drag us back to the top with little or no funds available. Bill Shankly managed it in the 50's and 60's however that just does not happen nowadays.

Rafa would receive about 16m to get rid of during the upcoming closed season. O'Neill is on a one year rolling contract with Villa so wouldn't cost anything for us to get him, however I believe he is actually the complete opposite to Benitez; tactically niaive, but a great motivator and people manager.
We will never win the league under Benitez because, tactically, he cannot string a whole season of good enough performances together even after five years in the prem. Somewhere along the line he loses the plot, drops in-form players, plays others out of position, adopts negative tactics against weaker opponents and generally worries more about the opposition than getting them to worry about us. Teams know they can beat us if they have a go.
That said, getting shot of G&H will be a start although of course we have to be wary of who it is takes over. Benitez could be given another year under new ownership, where nobody can use the disractions of boardroom shenanigins as an excuse for poor performances. After that, well we'll have to see.

S_A & PSB both make good points but there is also blame towards the players. All the money that they are paid and then they do not put the effort in some days. Look at Rierra, played well when selected regularily but then after injury took every chance to do a little as possible, adding to the already smoldering atmosphere.
O'neil is not the man for Liverpool, look what Phil Thompson did for us when Houllier was sick, should we not be looking at him?

I was at the Benfica match and have to admit the spams have upset the fans a wee bit, I think the 15 minute protest was a give away (I am happy to say I was in the Kop in full agreement and joined in). I for one will not be sad to see the back of Tom & George as they have put the club back as opposed to helping it grow, but that's just what I think. I do have faith in Rafa and think things will come good with a bit of stability in the boardroom. Sure it can cause upset amongst players, would you give your all if you thought you may be sold off to balance the books?

We need investment from someone who understands and enjoys football, and I for one care not if it's a rich Arab as the ones I've come across in my time all have a good understanding and liking of the game.

This below is quite quiet compared to half time against Benfica, I think the whole of the Liverpool support joined in.
