Here's one hopefully a nice TG17 can answer for me:

My mates at a Tri-Service camp and needs to get to Brize Norton in Feb for his DWR. His family home is in Yorkshire but is serving on the South coast and lives in the mess during the week.

The local civvie jobsworths who are Admin will only let him have a Hire Car from his work location (duty station) and not a military camp near the family home (he's not asking for it from his door step).....where he will be on leave before deploying.

This means he will have to drive past Brize Norton to get his car and come all the way back!?! which is circa 4 hours round trip alone.

How the hell can this be value for money as the journey to collect the hire car in his own vehicle will be a duty claim, as well as the hire car charges. It also means his car will stuck at the duty station for 4 months and not at home for his family.

JSP 800 is a bit vague as you clear from your unit before deploying so do not have accommodation provided at public expense but it does, as always, say to use the most cost affective method.

Any help appreciated

I've highlighted the bit in bold. Why would travelling to his parent unit be classed as duty?

However, I can see your point. I would suggest your friend ascertains how much it will cost for a one-way hire from duty unit to Brize, then compares it to the cost of a one-way hire from home address to Brize. He then takes it to his Budget Manager to authorise if the cost of the latter is less. Possibly MT at Leeming will take him to Brize? Always worth a shout.

Failing that, why not just travel from his home address to Brize in the family car with the family (they drive it back) and claim MMA, which I'm sure will be less than the cost of a one-way hire + fuel from either location. At the end of the day, that option will give him much more time with his family, which is priceless when it comes to the few days before an OOA.

It would be duty (i believe) as he's on the way to the Airport, it's just via a huge diversion. I don't think he wants the wife and kids driving through the night after dropping him off at Brize.

Had this issue with my DWR last year. Had the option of driving 3 hours from Wales to N Yorks to get MT to Brize, or make my own way there. Ended up paying for my own train ticket to Oxford.
