Mods I`m not sure which forum this should be in so please move if required.

Having been inspired by a thread about "what cheap flights", I decided to do some research. Also inspired by being a cheapskate pensioner.

Most Holiday makers like to go to the Med coasts, I have used Spain for my research. Its close and probably the cheapest destination.

As a regular bucket and spade holiday maker I used the Spanish resorts of Primarily Alicante and also Barcelona and Malaga.

I discovered that by flying to Madrid with JET2 a good saving can be made.

I typically fly to Spain and hire a car to take me to the Hotel I have selected, usually Alicante.

By flying to Madrid I have discovered that I can save the cost of the hire car versus flying to a coastal destination, mostly due to the lower demand for these flights, I have seen 99p flights to madrid plus taxes and fuel supplements, one quote amounted to £135 return for two.

So, the down side is a drive of 4 to 5 hours to the coast, the upside is you get to see a lot of the real Spain.

I can recommend the the resort of Santa Pola which is 15 mins south of Alicante City, great for beach lovers, absolute purgatory for club 18/30 and STD candidates.

Its a resort for mainly Spanish people,. your preference is up to you.

The JM hotel locally at Santa Pola is comfortable but not fancy, and they struggle with English language, stayed there many times.

I hope this generates information that may inspire my fellow cheapskates.

Hasta la vista

Another good spot for cheap Spanish holidays is the Costa Del La Luz, especially the area between Tarifa and Cadiz with resorts such as Barbate, Vejer De La Frontera, Tarifa, to name but a few, where you have the biggest, best and cleanest beaches, in my opinion, in Spain, if not the Med. The stretch between Cadiz and the Portuguese border is starting to get pricey, but the other side of Cadiz is much better. They're commutable from Malaga and Jerez airports, and cost a fraction of the price that Costa Del Sol holidays are costing.

Admittedly, a good understanding of Spanish is required as they're some of the resorts that the Spanish go to as opposed to Brits, Germans, etc, but if you're prepared to do your homework before you go, then you're in for a treat.
