I signed on for 6yrs, this was completed in 1981, now every single SAC and JT was asked if, on completion, they wanted to sign on for further 3 or 6 yrs. This is every single other airman except me. Now I made no bones of the fact I wanted out, but then so did everyone else, even though they would then sign on for more time when asked to do so.

My service record was exemplary, I reckon there were probably a couple of fizzers against my name but that was it.

The question is, how come the RAF knew that I was better suited to life outside. Was there some kind of secret report that went in stating that, even though your record looked clean you were a total waster etc.

I guess this question is directed at blokes who were in at that time and have now reached ranks like WO or whatever.

ps
please feel free to put sarkie/biting/vicious comments down, I welcome the distraction.

I think it was the other way around. I asked for, filled in the Gen. Application, and got signed on. But you must understand, it was a very-very-very long time ago.

Service records can either be exemplary or have fizzers on them hard to do both I reckon.

Well there was a report, but it wasn't really a secret.:PDT_Xtremez_42:

Sorry but this doesn't seem to ring true.
I signed on in 1973 for 3yrs, then extended to 6, then 9, then 12. These extensions were all done when I was within about 3 months of my exit date. Exemplary never featured in my service record and I had a "Q" in jankers.

I just didn't wish to go and sit in a classroom for twelve months on a fitters course as I was a dedicated liney.
I guess you just didn't upset enough people. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

I signed on for my 12 in the last 2 years, but only with heads up from my Sqn. They knew the SDSR was a possibility so they told be to get my arse to PSF and get the paperwork in. Month or so later followed by a medical etc I got the letter through saying my extension was approved. I think these days the ball is in your court for most things, PSF don't run after people anymore.

No mine was the former and had plenty of the latter.

Came out with an assessment of exemplary despite having had a 2 week all expenses paid break at the Bruggen RSDR health spa!!!
Did think about querying it but then thought b~gger it this might come in handy!!
Did 6 but didn't think asking to sign on at my 3 year point would have been a good idea as I'd just done at the health spa!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Yes, I totally agree with you on that. I think ''exemplary record'' was a touch misleading, what I should have said was that I was given an honourable discharge, which you get as long as you dont actually murder anyone, (well, premeditated anyway). So I guess the answer is that all my muckers who said they were ''asked'' to sign on probably got down on their bendeds and played the one eyed piccolo to get another 3/6 years.

Thanks to all who took the trouble to answer.
