Hi there,

I've been interested in getting on to the Red Arrows engineers ever since I joined the RAF 12.5 years ago. I gen ap'd, in the days before JPA, then when JPA came online, I selected the volunteer for Red Arrows Support box on JPA, put location choice as Lincolnshire, Job choice as 1st line Hawks, put a dit in the comments saying what I wanted and that I've got hawk experience.
Is there anything else I could do to improve my chances?
I've had Good assesments and was 3rd on the JT to Cpl Av board when I got promoted 4 years ago. I've got high profile secondary duties and do them outside work hours.

How do they select suitable personnel for posting to the Red Arrows?

Seriously though - give the RAFAT Wobbling Orange a ring and ask... he's a good guy.

Apparently, they aren't all fitted with testes these days, though there is a queue for that job longer than the first.

i'm currently posted on the reds as an av and all i can say is just put it on jpa and wait, it all depends on when the places come available, the waiting list wasn't that long last i heard however the sdsr might have seen a surge in people applying as for ringing the wo your better off talking to the fs as our wo is a admin reservist who isn't overly involved with the downstairs.

Make sure you have ROUTINE in the drop down box and not RAF NO MOVE or you won't even be looked at if a slot comes up.

Best thing to do, and this applies to all posts that you would like, is to get in your car and drive to Scampers and introduce you to the FS and the TMs. They can't guarantee anything but if you leave a lasting positive impression you name may well be remembered when discussing potential new blokes with ACOS when the slots eventually come up. The best time to visit is in just after Christmas when you can be sure that the right people will be there. If you go in the summer you'd be lucky to see anyone!

Also, if you actually visit the Team it may allay any misconceptions you might have, there has been plenty of keen lads and lasses who begged to be granted an opportunity to come to the Team and then discovered the amount of sacrifice and dedication that the job demands was quite different to the glamorous existence they expected. Remember, it is still a Squadron, albeit one that flies more aircraft concurrently, completes more sorties and works to exceptionally tight timelines than all other Squadrons that I've known about. Oh and doing all this with well used airframes that have to be kept in the best of health possible! It is definitely not for everyone, although that said, it does have the occasional fantastic reward! I could bore you for hours with the tales of fine hotels, tropical beaches and the adoring public!

Good luck and if you want any advice PM me.

I applied for the reds in 1986!!!!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_19: I feel I may have missed the boat however having left 4 1/2 years ago! :S

I applied in 1986 as well the posting came through in 2004. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

As NR13 said it's a two edged sword at times and be under no illusion the public never adored him:PDT_Xtremez_14:

What is the average tour length people spend on the reds at the moment?

Always got the feeling guys got on the reds and bbmf and stayed there for ever meaning vacancies were few and far between but would love to be proved wrong

max tour length is five years although many people choose to leave before then or get picked up and therefore move on

If its any help at all im only a cadet and i went on a summer camp at scampton a few weeks ago and was speaking to an engineer there (not on the red arrows) and i asked if he wanted to be posted on the reds and he said there is a waiting list where people just wait for a spot to open up.
May have just typed out something you already knew there but i hope it helps if you didnt :p
