How do you make an image from 2 pics?

I'm trying to make myself an avatar.
Trouble is I havent a clue how to superimpose one pic onto another.
What I need to work out is how to cut the items out of the pics and then have them both together one of top of the other.
I only seem to be able to completely cover one with the other and I dont know how to cut out just the item if you know what I mean?

That would do the trick. But posting a link for WWW.gimp.org looks rather dubious !!!
