Perhaps the wrong place to ask, but i assume someone somewhere is being taught Russian through service means..

Im self studying at the moment, only just started, so im wondering what the military use to teach languages?

В школе, названной chicksands, где они тыкают Вас с ' большой дубинкой ', пока Вы не быстры

On a more serious note, what are you after? I've started learning Japanese of my own back but are you looking for service courses?

Im not necessarily looking for a service run course, just wondering what teaching methods/teaching medium they use, and if this can be made available to service people like myself who want to self study?

Im currently working through Michel Thomas and BYKI

ISK used to run basic russian courses through TDF so some other TDFs may offer this facility. The sometimes have interactive CDs for loan, as for how the service teach languages i can't answer that but it's worth asking TDF.

You can check in with your local TD Flt for more info (fraid I dont have much to hand). You can normally pick up the audio stuff from them, sign it out for a couple of weeks (at least thats how it used to be).

The Service also gives more official language training for various posts etc at The Defence LAnguage School Beaconfield (think thats the right name for it) There was a thread running on ARRSE with some useful gen on it.

Kernow is right - if the RAF send you to a post that requires a language then they will either train you at the Language School or arrange local training at a college/uni or 1 to 1 with an instructor.

Believe it or not the RAF has a linguist trade, although they tend to be a bit of a joint service asset, and an RAF JT (or whatever rank) linguist could easily find themselves on an infantry foot patrol as a ship or RAF unit. The way it was a couple of years ago was if you can speak a second language, go to the education centre and get the books full of military vocab in your chosen language. When you're ready book yourself into Beaconsfield for an exam at the appropriate level as an external candidate. If you pass you get a one off payment based on which list (based on difficulty) your language is in, and what level, then it gets annotated on JPA, and the RAF can call on your language skills as required.

The only people who get language courses are those that require them, either due to something like long look or a NATO posting, or RAFLO post etc.

On the intranet is a link to DB Learning. They, in conjunction with your Education/DELC, do language learning, some of it is using the Rosetta Stone CDs.

Didnt realise they taught the Australian and New Zealand languages there!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Русским будет легкий язык, котор нужно выучить, хорошее везение.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll pick the brains of my friendly(?) education centre when i get to my new unit.

So basically, study like fook and then ask to do an exam. Better hit the books :PDT_Xtremez_18:

Stick something in the Spooks forum - they probably don't look in any of the others - something to do with Military and Intelligence I think :PDT_Xtremez_30:
