Hi, can anyone shed any light on how long it takes for an officer to get promoted to Flt Lt if commissioned from the ranks as a substantive Sgt as opposed to an acting Sgt having not yet done IMLC / TEAMT2. Thanks. Google doesn't seem to have the answer and AFCO / PSF are closed for Christmas!

Don't quote me but having looked at this before and if my memory serves me well...

18 months for an Ex-SAC / SAC(T) / JT
12 months for an Ex-CPL
6 months for an Ex-Sgt

I'm fairly sure the details can be found in one of the 2 AP's for Terms Of Service (Most probably the Commissioned one).

As far as I recall, you don't get the seniority fopr previous rank, or courses you might have done; you get it only for reckonable service, which is counted as 50% of reckonable time served = seniority.

However, you have to do a minimum of 2 years as a Fg.Off first under any circumstances, and then it's pretty much automatic to Flt Lt unless you are a complete tool.

I had 12 years, so divide that by 2 and it was enough to grad as a Fg Off, (but cannot remember if I needed 4 or 6; think it was 4.).

^^^ what Stevie said. I did 13 years and went through as a substantive Cpl. After IOT it was 2 years as a Fg Off before Flt Lt. I did hear of an ex-ranker who took 4 years to get from Fg Off to Flt Lt but drink/fighting/biffing WRAFs was involved ;)

SAC = 2 1/2 years
Cpl = 2 years
Sgt = 18 months
Flt Sgt = 1 year

This also applies for those joining from sister Services and their equivalent ranks. Hope this helps.

What he said as well. I had done 14 years in with 4 as a Sgt before I was commissioned. I had to do 2 years as a Fg Off, although I was paid as a level 2 Flt Lt. It is a good idea to get this sorted in your own mind before you go to OASC as they will ask you about it! Good luck.

The info I gave is current and correct based on substantive ranks as of 2013. Experiences before that or due to not being substantive obviously differ. I too was paid on a non-rank related pay scale upon commissioning as they give you a pay rise on graduation and cannot drop your wages. Merry Xmas
