I'm sure someone out there must know how much a quarter must cost the RAF to 'run'?

Would be very interested to see that vs how much the average recipient receives in HTD.

Can you see where I'm going with this?....

Yes, you are trying to apply logic...It´ll NEVER happen, but nice try!

Ask them a few posing questions under the freedom of information act. or get your missus to do it. Should be worth a laugh.

Watching the news recently is quite clear to see that the Govt. are U-turning on quite a number of issues under not that great deal of pressure.

Would be interesting for those that could get hold of the numbers to put a case forward, who knows what may come of it.

Are you going down the road of suggesting we should build more married quarters where they are needed, which would have the secondary effect of reducing the HDT bill for those accommodated elsewhere?

No but if it were proven that that the cost to the MoD on a monthly basis for a MQ was equal or greater than the HDT bill it could at least be used to prevent any further decrease.

OK. Well, the simple answer to your question is that MQs don't cost the MoD anything because they are owned by Annington Homes and operated by Defence Estates. I believe it's more complicated than that - for example, I was once told that the MoD has to pay Annington Homes the rent on unoccupied MQs, which sounds about right for an MoD contract.

If I read the original post properly it seems a simply enough question. Which is cheaper in pounds sterling for the public purse, the upkeep of a quarter at your place of work or paying you HTD to live elsewhere. Bet the answer is a darn sight more complicated though :PDT_Xtremez_34:

The wonders of PPP/PFI.... :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Your taxes being well spent! Or should that be well-spent?:PDT_Xtremez_06:

should you add SSSA into the equation, plenty of folk getting all these extra rates when all they gotta do is supply more digs

Defence Estates are part of the MOD. They (the MOD) pay a a rent for the FQ stock to Annington Homes or other PFI provider (non-PFI SFA in Scotland are still owned by the MOD) and also pay for any maintenance.

Obviously a proportion of the costs of the SFA estate are offset by rents paid by occupants.

Most of the housing stock in England and Wales are owned by Annington Homes Limited.

The MoD leased these back on 999 year lease with options every 25. The MoD pays AHL a sum per MQ to AHL to use there assets.

In addition to the routine response maintenace the MoD also has landlords obligations for gas and electrical testing amongst many others. A lot of the testing is a hang over from PSA and probably is not required.

The MoD also funds refurbishment programmes to upgrade the MQ.

When the services decide to close a site and declare the MQ surplus (Never done just by DE) they are returned back to AHL to sell on the open market. Before they are sold a delapidation survey is completed and anything in need of a repair is paid for by the MoD.

The now ex MQ are sold on the open market with a profit share agreement back to the MoD or treasury.

As well as regular MQ there are a number of PFI MQ sites which MoD party a third party to provide a managed service. The only involvment the MoD has is contract management and allocating the MQ.

Circa 2000 we proved it was cheaper for the MoD to provide the service rather than a PFI contract but we where told its too late.......

That's the problem. Building new houses is easy. What makes it difficult is all the other stuff that goes with it - schools, doctors' surgeries and local shops are just the tip of the iceberg.

Youre not wrong there KB, you should see the place I've just been allocated...gated compound...tended grounds..I kid you not.:PDT_Xtremez_42:

The really interesting question is doing your research on who was on the Board of Directors for Annington Homes when the MoD sold its housing stock (also check out Board advisors) - when you realise some of the names then you will be quite shocked!!
