Not sure if in the right forum, got 2.5 years to go, I remember from a previous resettlememt chat that you can get the British legion to get you money/compensation from the MOD when you leave is this true? may seem a bit early but I am emigrating so just after facts and figures to try and form a financial plan, so any body that has good info on this , muchos gracias

In what respect are you looking for compo?

Lower back pain, bad knees, loss of hearing %, general wear and tear through work, again going on memory sure the legion woman said you can claim just give them your details and nature of claim

I work with a bloke who went down the deafness route and he got nowhere, it appears that you've got to have substantial lack of hearing for any kind of compensation. And as for the rest of your ills, I hope that you went to see the RAF Doctor at the time of the original illness and that it is on your med docs otherwise you've got no evidence to support your claim.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

The British Legion were excellent when I asked for assitance gave them all the info and permission to act my behalf and they did the rest got over £4K for hearing loss and its not that bad. Also got a prescription waiver for my knees etc. Cant fault the legion did an ace job for me. Word of advice make sure you ask for a copy of your medical records well in advance before you are going to check they reflect correctly any treatment you have had I know when I got a copy of mine there were huge bits missing. In fact I would recommend that everyone whether leaving or not should get a copy just to check as when you leave that gate you get no assistance from anyone, it took me nearly a year to get my certificate of discharge and then they got it wrong!!

Just out of interest what levels of deafness are you suffering? (I've just recieved my compensation application paperwork from the RBL this morning). And when did you leave? I know that a few years ago you could get a lump sum payout quite easily and quickly by going through the RBL but it looks as tho the system has 'tightened up' somewhat in recent years:S. I've got a copy of my Med Docs (couldn't agree more about getting a copy, ask at the Med Center for a release form) and they show that 2 years ago my sum totals were as follows:
Sum HF Right 65dB
Sum LF Rt 15 dB
Sum HF Left 75dB
Sum LF Lt 25 dB

I had a hearing test recently on joining my current job and the results were much the same.

I found this thread on PPrune to be quite interesting (and dis-heartening to be honest :PDT_Xtremez_40:) - http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/286285-war-veterans-agency-pension-claim.html

Just under 2 years ago, I actually got the ball rolling with the legion before I left, sorry cant tell you what my hearing figures were just I know I have lost some of the high tones. What I would say is when you fill out the form tell it as it is. i.e. you have trouble hearing conversations in crowded situations, the wife complains I have the TV too loud, the RAF did nothing to reduce the likely hood of further hearing damage once they realised I had suffered damage, how often have you had a hearing test? (Yearly I believe it should be) I was issued with inadequate / incorrect hearing IPE such as the old white amplivox ear defs that actually amplified some tones. And when you leave you owe NOTHING to the RAF trust me you will get no help whatsoever, also when you have your hearing test do it properly if you cannot CLEARLY hear the tones during the test then don’t hit the button. Obviously do not lie or exaggerate but do it properly if you get my drift. I know you have left but you should have had a discharge medical hearing test what were the results? and have you been in touch with the legion. I'm sure that there will be people out there thinkng money grabbing B******ds but hearing loss is cumulative and once gone will never return so the natural deteriation you will get becomes worse due to the damage you received. That and the RAF fail in their responsibilty to you, my current company insist on hearing protection at all times when on the plant and also pay for individuals to get custom made ear plugs because they know how much it would cost them.

And you can't tell us your hearing stats because? Were the bits missing the hearing records?

Sorry a bit late answering but I was back onshore for 2 weeks so only just logged back on, To answer your question I don't have the readings with me offshore having said that the legion did not require them, I filled out the forms said what the effect was etc, listed the damage to my knees and then I had to go for an independent check, never saw the results it was all done for me. Next time I'm onshore I will check the ruling and see if it said anything in that about the severity etc.

BB, as far as the old white defs & the green ones with mics, was there any better equip' out at the time we were made to use them? Only asking the question as I am nearing my end & have recently failed my H teas, mainly on left ear, which always faced f'ing Tonka ECUs.
Will the RAF give me a copy of my med docs while still serving out my last 18 months?

i had a huge hearing loss when i left in 70,but it was not found out until i went for a hearing test in 82.
i was given a tonal test which only recognised a 15% loss and was refused a pension because the lowest award was for a 20% loss.
3 yrs ago i had a speech hearing test which is apparently a more accurate test, and i had 97%loss in my rt ear,and 43%loss in the left,i now have to wear two aids.
my advice to anyone with a hearing problem,is to demand the speech test and not the tonal test,as this is deliberatly less accurate so that the pensions dept dont have to pay out to so many people,

As far as I know there was better equipment was available but thats not the point how often was your hearing checked? Were procedures in place to check that you were not having your hearing adversely affected? etc etc, Also as far as I know you can ask for a copy of your medical docs whenever you like under the Data Protection act as it is held electronically. I just had to fill out a request in pers admin, mind you that was 2 years ago.
