Hi everyone!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I am completely new here, in fact I only stumbled across the site today!

As I intend to join the RAF in the very near-future, I thought it would be a good idea to join and possibly chat to some people who have first-hand experience. It will also be a good way to pass time in the office.........but you don't know that right :PDT_Xtremez_15:

Anyway, my name is Tom and I am 17. I have just finished dragging my sorry self through 6th form (was moved up a year in school, so yes that is my age lol) and I have applied to the RAF to be a pilot (fast-jet, failing that - anything!).

I like music, enjoying myself with the company of my friends and my only goal in life is to thoroughly enjoy it. That should be enough about me for now, I'm sure you will find out a bit more over time.

I guess I have written more than enough now so I will shush:PDT_Xtremez_06: . I will undoubtedly be asking you all what the application process is like and what it involves sometime soon, so for now, Hi all, take care and I shall speak to you all again shortly!:PDT_Xtremez_31:

Welcome to the goat...enjoy the banter and remember the truth is out there, just no fecker can be bothered to look for it:PDT_Xtremez_15:

This isnt a dating site you know!!!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_25:

And I should know!!!!!

Welcome to the Goat Tomcat.

This is a top site for banter, rumour, humour and heavy doses of reality/cynicism.

Although you will get some advice here, we are not heavily subscribed by the flying fraternity (as far as I know). The best place for advice on that would be the Military Aircrew forum on PPRuNe .

They can be a bit tetchy at times and there are already a lot of threads from people like yourselves. Have a read of them before you start posting up questions that have been answered a dozen times. If you don't they'll just have a good bleat and probably put you off joining up.

Enjoy the site and good luck.

Don't Do It!!!

Oh gawd - you werent being serious were you!?:PDT_Xtremez_03:

Thanks for the welcome, though I guess you wont be hearing from me much anymore........I mistook this for a dating site......damn!

My bad! :PDT_Xtremez_15:

EDIT: Thanks for pointing me in the right direction lovesock - Think I will stick around here a bit though - I like all the banter and jokes - gets me through the day and saves me gnawing off my own limbs in deperate boredom!

Probably.

I will say that I couldn't really recommend any job in the RAF at the moment apart from pilot/nav. There is no civvy equivalent (unless you finish up on Tri-Stars/VC-10s).

For any other trade there is greener grass elsewhere.:PDT_Xtremez_37:

The only reason I want to join is to fly (I'm dreading the question "so why do you want to join the RAF!") and flying commercial doesn't really appeal to me.

I dont think I would join the armed forces for anything that has a civvy equivalent (like you said) - I don't think there is enough freedom so it wouldnt be worth it.

I left the Airforce recently, and was an Airframe techie but passed selection at Oxford to do Airline pilot training, and I reckon Civvy pilots get paid more than thier military counterparts.

So dont rule it out!

Bit more cash, yes, but would you rather be a well paid bus driver or drop a couple of grand a year and drive rally cars all day? Well, when I say all day, I really mean "occasionally, but only if they have the bits/manpower to get one flying"!!

Also, if you join up you don't have to pay off your eleventy million pound course fees!

Why are you working as a rigger then?

Because thats what I was in the RAF (Discharged 22 November), and dont start Oxford till next November, so am just working alot of overtime as I will be unemployed for 65 weeks.

But if you get a job as a First Officer with BA, you're looking at £60,000 starting.

I am pretty sure that they do! A lot more too!

But it just doesn't seem as....fun I guess.

Commercial seems to be; take off> press button (plane flies itself)> land.

Not quite the same as flying a Harrier/Eurofighter I dont think.........

The pay doesn't bother me anyway, I have already figured out that money is just an obstacle to be overcome in life and I want a job that is more rewarding than a paycheck at the end of the month.

I'm having a look around PPRUNE now - it is kinda hard finding what I need, but I am getting there. :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Welcome to the goat Tomcat. From your initial posts you seem a reasonably level-headed geezer so if you make it to punching holes in the ozone layer, remember what you have read here, and more importantly the people who wrote it - groundcrew.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Good to meet you Tomcat - we'll soon whip all that enthusiasm out of you! Enjoy the site, I've only been a member for 3 days and I can't keep off the bloody thing!

Welcome to the goat, joining up is the worst thing you could do!! If your into sport you can still get time, off even these days............. I recommend RUGBY.
