So yeah, I drink a lot. It doesn't affect my work and I want to get sorted but I don't want it to be recorded anywhere. If I go to the med centre will it be recorded on my docs?

Yep. Drinking a lot doesn't make you an alcoholic by the way.

Well the amount I do probably does. I would like to get something done but I don't want it in my medical. It seems counter-intuitive to get people to stop by having it recorded somewhere and it coming to bite them in the arse later on in life. Are there any civilian charities I can get I touch with?

Alcoholics Anonymous sounds like a good start for you. If you genuinely think you have an issue well done for facing it before it trashes your life.

Yes and no. The problem is not the qty but whether you have control over your drinking or does it control you.

a good little test is, if you can not have a drink for a day or even longer and it doesn't bother you then you are probably in control.
There is a subtle but important difference between an alcoholic and someone who is alcohol dependant
Not an expert but having know a few people who have gone down the dark path my tip is to try and nip it in the bud before it bites you big time, hope you get sorted

My PHC colleagues may correct me but anything that is discussed within a medical consultation is 'in-confidence'. If you do have a alcohol problem then the support of the med centre may be crucial in helping you to get sorted. The fact that you think you have a problem and want to do something about it can only be a positive thing.

There are some excellent external agencies that can help but getting access to them may be facilitated by going the Med Center route.

I wouldnt worry too much if you recognise the problem everyone else around you have noticed also. I would search for good advise with AA or the Station Doctor. The thing is to make sure problem does not start to effect you work or the family. In my day during the Eighties, alcohol was a curse for most squaddie being barred or arrested by the civvy cops. But if you were picked up on station by Snowdrops you could face a charge. If you are with a lot of buddies who equally go out getting sloshed this would make it hard to break a habit. I remember an old friend of mine who drank like a true welshman on a bender. He was either AWOL for a few days or on a charge until one day when I asked why he was look ashen faced after I came back off leave only for the reply He had got married:PDT_Xtremez_17: Let that be a warning when you get too drunk:PDT_Xtremez_30:

There are some excellent agencies i agree but having gone through them myself most are government funded and duty bound to inform your work/doctor.

The exception to this is AA, not for me as it is very religion orientated.

From someone with an alcohol problem, strangely the best people to seek out are alcoholics, i had a neighbor who approached me with the same issues, oddly we never drank together. not once did we encourage it but the act of just going for a walk/chat with him helped a lot.

if you can not drink for a few days then your fine, trust me if your an alcoholic you will know it.
