Ok this may seem like a weird question for a RAF website and I hope you don't mine me asking but I need a unbiased opinion, having recently finished college I have decided now is the right time for me to join the armed forces, for ages now all I've wanted was to be a member of the Parachute Regiment but the more I look into it the more the Royal Marines look like a better option, not only is there basic training the longest in NATO (some say the world) but also the Para's haven't actually done an operational parachute jump in an since WW2, on the other hand no women as ever completed P Coy yet they have done the Commando Course, both careers look very challenging and both look like something I would really want to do.

I've talked to lots of people from the other forces and haven't gotten anywhere, the Marines all say Marines, the Para's obviously all say Para's and the rest of Navy and Army all seem to have their own personal biases so it seems to me like the Royal Air Force is the only place to get a unbiased yet educated opinion.

And I don't need anyone to tell me how hard it is to get into these Regiments I'm already fully aware of the fitness standards and train appropriately, these are my two options, I'm serious about what I want to do and all I want is your opinion on which is the better choice.

So what do you think Maroon Machine or Green Terrors?

Not sure where this is going but, I would check about lasses completing the Commando course. I dont think one has. Dont get confused by Lasses being in the Marines band.

Otherwise, it is an answer you must ultimately work out for yourself. The histories of the two units are very different and produce pride within the units. Might sound strange but is an important thing to them.

The Para's might not have a done a recent op jump, but they do still jump. If you dont think you can do that then I would say Marine, if you get sea sick, probably Para.

the Para's haven't actually done an operational parachute jump in an since WW2,

err, Suez?

Both units have their place - the Commandos are arguably the best amphib troops in the World (pound-for-pound) while the Paras (note the lack of apostrophe) are very good shock troops, either delivered to the battlefield by parachute, helicopter or on foot! In a fair fight, there is less than a Rizla paper's width between them for professionalism and aggression. The Marines treat their basic soldiers in a slightly more adult manner, (but that is only my opinion), and they get the chance to 'specialise' as landing craft specialists, mountain & arctic warfare, on top of the usual weapon specialisations that the Paras have. Some also qualify as parachutists. (On top of that Marine officers are less up their own @rses (IMO))

If you like Colchester - go Para, Plymouth/Arbroath - Marines. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Women aren't allowed combat jobs I know that, but they have being allowed to attempted both tests before and either one or two of the women who did the AACC passed they all failed P Coy, look it up if you want.

Having worked with them both I would say the RM edge it in most departments. Good luck with your choice.

I've being leaning towards RM for a while now, I just needed someone else to confirm it was the right decision, looks like Commandos it is then, thanks. :)

One of my best friends is a para, and is with SFSG, which is a combined selection of all three, para, RM and Raf Regt.
I would naturally say para because I know half of 1 para and they are sound blokes, I know when they formed SFSG the RM did struggle to make the grade and it took them 3 attempts at being accepted into it, the RAF Regt passed on their second attempt.

Without going into too much detail I know they do and it is just plain old fashioned bonkers.

If it was my choice then I would go Para, afterall would you want to be stuck on a ship with a bunch of blokes. I did work with a RM and he wouldn't show us his ID card because we would take the mickey becasue it said Royal Navy.

I've only met a few paras and a few marines so not much to go on.

However, out of those I've met the Maureens seemed a little more switched on and a bit more mature.

I may be slightly biased though as my Grandad was one of the originals!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Mate, the only one who can make the decision is you, asking an internet forum to decide on your life choices is a bit of a concern.

Forgive me for being either insensitive or blunt, why? If you you aren't allowed to do the full job then what's the point?

Having had the pleasure of working with both I have to say that the Marines would win hands down. They work harder, play harder and again not taking anything away from the girl who completed the AACC it isn't the same as completing the 32 weeks at Lympston to earn the Green Beret.

When you put it like that it does sound kind of bad , but I wasn't really asking for you to decide, I'd already made my mind up 99.99% and if everyone said Paras it probably wouldn't of made a difference I really just wanted to hear it from someone else that I was making the right decision going for RM, now I'm 100% sure what I want to do and will be going back to the AFCO first thing Monday morning.

That's good cos 99.99% of people need not apply! :PDT_Xtremez_30:
