I have just spent the best part of 2 hours trying to insure my son on a group2car for less than a king's ransom.

Has anybody any contacts/tips/witty comments to assist wth finding insurance for a waste of space 17 year old student on a provisional, at a figure slightly less than the national debt of a small South American Country........??????:PDT_Xtremez_35: :PDT_Xtremez_35:

confused.com or moneysupermarket.com may be worth a try. Good luck, it can be a real pain in the arrse.

the good old co op too for kiddie drivers are usually pretty good

When you insure him, make sure you put yourself down as a named driver if you have full no claims, and any other family members who have full NCB too.

I did this last year, just adding my dad to the policy as a named driver saved me £400!!!!!! - and he won't ever drive the bloody thing!

My lad did something called "pass plus" - its an extension of the basic lessons - takes in night driving and motorways I think - norwich union knocked something off for that :PDT_Xtremez_35:

Actually both of those websites are a complete nightmare, the prices they quote are not the prices that come up when you go through the process, they are normally a good 70 quid higher and with a 17yr old male it'll be more likely a couple of hundred.

When getting insurance one thing that people used to try and pull on us was that they were getting a 2nd car with the child as the named driver, when in fact it was the child's car - not worth trying as if found out the insurance will be null and void. If you do a net search on google or something for young drivers insurance (or look in the back of Max Power, if they still do the adds in the back).

Unfortunately he's the highest risk group for drivers but as shettie said 'pass plus' will help bring the cost down with some insurers or do advanced driving test as I know Tesco reduce their premiums for that.

I am true to my name Uber Pikey, Always take the lowest quote you get to other branches and play them off one another. Dont let them match a quote unless there are better benefits because they just fob you off.
Once you have the lowest quote then go through the yellow pages for local insurers and see if they can beat the lowest again.
Good luck

Try quinns.com/co.uk. They are supposed to be quite cheap. Good luck, we are looking at paying £1000 for our 17 year old at sunny SH base south of Oxford:PDT_Xtremez_35:

Why are you letting the social outcast drive your car anyway ??? Still if you let him drive it at least your car will have a chance of braking the 15 Mph barrier unlike when you drive it :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Try Forces Direct 01202 498000 found them to be really good. If they ask you what your best quote is reduce it by £200 or so and they will match it....

Who told you I'd been speeding?::/:

Cheers for the tips people another morning of messing about is req'd.

As for letting him drive somebody's going to be picking me up from the pub a lot .........payback for 17 years of me being the taxi driver:PDT_Xtremez_42:

Sure NU also did this thing where you could only drive between certain hours thus reducing the premium, i.e. not at night. A box is fitted to the car with GPS, and if the car was moved outside the stated hours the policy holder would get a monthly bill for the extra usage.

Hope this helps?

Try quinns.com/co.uk. They are supposed to be quite cheap. .....

Just contacted Norwich Union to see how much it would be to add my son (17, provisional) as a named driver onto my policy for our commuting car (Fiesta). They want £440 for the remaining 6 months of the policy with an excess of £370 for him FFS! That is fully comp as they have allegedly stopped doing 3rd Party, Fire & Theft. So that would be say £800 for a year, the car isn't worth much more than that FFS!

So off I went to moneysupermarket.com -
Quinns came out cheapest at £330 for 3rd Party,Fire & Theft (£600 Comprehensive), now that I like!

my son who is 21 passed his test last oct and bought himself a focus 1.6 and had the same problems, stupid prices anything up to £3000.
As he was paying for it himself i sacrificed my no claims on my corsa and transferred them to his insurance so it brought the cost down to a grand. As I am an old git my insurance only went up about 100 quid which to be fair he offered to pay.
It seems the companies have sussed a lot of the old loopholes now and its almost impossible not to get hammered.

How exactly did you do this Sid?

Well I cancelled my insurance and asked for the no claims certificate and insured my son with me as a named driver, so hopefully after about 2 years he will aquire the no claims.
I then re-insured myself without any no claims on my other car, cant remember the companies but will dig them out if you want, hope this helps

If you are only adding him as a named driver, some companies have started letting named drivers earn their own no claims bonus. Direct line is one I definately know of, however I have no idea how expensive this will work out in the long run. Their premiums could be a small fortune to cover this.
