Hey everyone,
I am in the early stages of applying as a WSOp Linguist. Its my first option, but recently have become quite interested in the Intelligence Analyst Voice job.....
Does anyone know if this trade will be open soon?
Is this job very competitive and how long is the trade training for this job.
One of the reasons I am looking at this is because I would like the oppurtunity to work in languages/comms and also I am worried about the WSOp option as you have to spend a large amount of time in the sky, and I am not sure that is for me although th job sounds great!
Any help/thoughts or advice would be fantastic!
:O)

Unless you are 101% committed to flying for a job then don't even go sdown the process of applying for aircrew...It's very much all or nothing...the pay reflects that!

Sorry I can't offer you any gen on the IAV job...I know a few WSOp linguists and they are all waiting to see what is happening to their frame and with it their future so potentially its not a stable environment on their horizon at the moment...

I'd wait out and see what is happening with WSOp Linguist first as recruiting for that branch has shut and will remain so for the near future. If a career in languages is what you are after, you can always try the Int An (V) route, or failing that, language training is open to all trades in the RAF.

The AFCO should bve able to advise you of this though I heard that that AFCO year starts in Apr so I'd guess this is when things open up again.
How long is the trade training for this job?
I'm not Int An (V) but did my trade trg at the same place. I believe the initial trade training is 18 months or there abouts but you may have to go back for further training. I seem to remember someone there telling me that the better ones can be chosen to back for further training to become translators which I think was another year or year and a half.

You will be required to go for a specialist interview for Int An (V) before your application will be accepted. Also, If you do decide to go down this route, you will train alongside RN and Army though it's headed up by Army so things are quite strict and PT sessions can be more intense than you would get at a normal RAF training camp (I'll never forget the day a marine offered to 'assist' the PTI by giving us all an extra special Marine style beasting, *shiver*). Don't let that put you off though because at the end of the day, no matter where you go, you will be a trainee so will have stricter rules than normal RAF anyway.

Recruiting year starts in Apr, but the AFCOs will need to start processing people long before that. Next year's recruiting targets should be known by about Sep so expect trades to re-open in Sep/Oct.

Thanks for clearing that up Krusty. Like I said, that was only my guess, clearly a bad guess :PDT_Xtremez_35:

I wouldn't expect WSOp(L) to become re-available for a while, recruiting has been particularly productive for those individuals. It's doubtful whether we will recruit them for next year at present.

Thanks to everyone for their comments - they have all been very helpful.
I have decided to apply for IAV, as I think I am more suited to this role as opposed to WSOp Linguist. As Vim Fuegor mentioned I am not 101% committed to flying for 8-10 hours in a plane so i think i would struggle.
Will ring AFCO tomorrow and get my name on the list ASAP, ready for when they start processing.
From what I can gather this trade is very competitive so I think I may have to wait a while to get in but I am determined as its what I want to to do so hopefully it will be worth waiting for!!! I just hope that my age wont hold me back as I am 33!!

Thanks again.

Hey,
Just to update, I have now changed my application to Intel Analyst!
I have my AST on the 15th so I am studying like mad to pass, fingers crossed!! Didnt expect them to book me in so soon, feels like things are starting to happen now!
It looks and sounds an amazing career and the more I study this trade the better it gets..!

May have to ask some advice on the special assessment at a later date!
