Inter Arm Transfer Army - RAF

Hi all,

Ive been in the army 11 years as a Communication systems operator (thats what there calling us at the moment anyway) its a similar trade to your ICT specialists and ive finally seen the light and want to transfer over to the RAF

I have a few questions about two trades in the RAF and if anyone knows of anyone who has come across to the RAF from the Army.

Im looking into trying to become an Intelligence anylist failing that an aerospace systems operator.

Does anyone know if id keep my rank if i managed to come across (CPL) ?
What sort of posting can i expect ?
How long are your postings ?
How long are your tours and how often ?
Do you get to choose your postings ?

If anyone could help me it would be a big help.

Do you have apostrophes in the Army?

Everything else can be answered by your local AFCO.

How long are your postings ? As a general rule until you are promoted or choose to move.
How long are your tours and how often ? If this is OOA on average 4 mths every 12mths, we dont move every couple of years like the army.
Do you get to choose your postings ?Up to a certain point, main factor is manpower levels

Sorry I can't answer the rest, I left the RAF a year ago and was in a different trade but some of your questions are generic to all.

Someone who is from your chosen trade will be able to give a more in depth answer.

Jim, I'm lead to believe that the main obstacle for this kind of move will be with your lot...basically, if they have a shortage in your trade they might not let you go...I know of one person (a while ago though,) who had to leave the Army and join the RAF...All had to go through the AFCO.

In trade (Phase two) training you will be asked to complete a "dream sheet" of desired postings...however, service needs and all that mean you can end up anywhere.

I am sure there will be an Int guy along to answer a bit more specifically, but as I understand their trade, Cpl is not only based on ability etc, but training...You would have to complete all the courses to hold the rank, so would probably transfer over as an SAC, but with seniority. Same goes for ASOp...

As the sensible ASOp type on here I would be very carefull in selecting this as a career choice. The postings, whilst there are some good ones later on, are limited and I am not sure about the rank thing. I know for remusterees (if that is a word) they are given a fixed length of time to complete the competencies relevant to their old rank in the new trade. How that works coming from another service I don't know.

From the ASOp perspective the OOAs are few and far between (except certain Formed Units).
