Has anyone played back films they have downloaded via iTunes and played them back on tv. About to try it when the film has downloaded. Assume I can simply play it on the laptop, connect laptop to tv via hdmi cable and hey presto?

Yea will work fine. Your TV will just be a dumb device, doesn't matter what media your playing on your laptop. I play CoD on mine and use my TV screen.
