For some obscure reason, nothing seems to work properly without Java on the updated Firefox v33.1.
I got a new version (v8 update 25) and it seems to go in OK, but I am getting peeved with various site returning a
"You need java to do this".

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Sometimes you don't just need Java, but a particular (earlier) version - multiple versions can co-exist. Sounds messy ('cos it is), but may be the solution to your 'you need Java' messages. HTH!
