Hi there

I'm approaching the end of my 2nd year of a 3 year tour and thinking about what to do next.

I'm an Avionics Sgt with 2 years in rank and one avenue I'm considering is instructor.

With qualifications in FD and AT, JMLC instructor appeals and I was hoping there may be someone on here who may be able to shed some light on what's involved and what it's like.

Many thanks.

Only thing I'd say is be aware of the consequence of going out of trade.....

IMHO, I think that line of thought is pretty old hat. Spoke to the Avionics trade sponsor, Career Manager and the promotion boarders on this very question last week and they now see out of trade as a very worth while assignment and if you get the write up to match, is seen as extremely positive and the guys I have worked with certainly think it has assisted them in getting promoted.

The folks that teach on JMLC/IMLC and AMLC seem to love it, long hours but say it is very rewarding. They are always looking for interested people. I'm sure you can find it out anyway but PM me if you want the current OC or WO's name so you can get in touch.

You'll find that out of trade posts can hugely enhance a career profile instead of hinder it. Provided that the individual concerned actually does well in it, it shows extra capacity for work outside of the normal trade spec, leadership and management of personnel from different trades and branches, keeping the Air Force in the public eye in some cases (e.g. AFCOs) and being able to problem solve in a completely different set of issues, to name but a few of the positives. Put it this way, if out of trade posts had negative consequences on careers, they wouldn't be able to ask for volunteers would they? I've lost count of the number of friends and colleagues of mine who've done out of trade work and either been promoted directly after their tour, or being employed in that post has been a major factor in their following promotion.

Perhaps outside of TG1, but I've not seen many of that trade group do well out of an out of trade job IME. Happy to be proved wrong in this one though.

Not sure I'd agree with that Downsizer, my current place of work has a very young floppy sausage who has spent most of his career in MR, doesn't show at all honest!

That's fair enough mate, but that's one example, and someone will always buck the trend...

We've got 2 Av CT's who were promoted from Sgt without having worked in trade at all at the rank of Sgt. One was AFCO and the other Int stuff. Times are changing with ref to out of Trade!

Interesting.....it would be good to see OOT tours being recognised at last.

That said It's always been easy for fairies to get promoted....:PDT_Xtremez_42:

What would worry me is how effective these guys are in a situation where they were last gainfully employed two ranks below what they are now operating at.

I winced when the Chf Clk tried to give me someone who had been out of trade for a couple of years, let alone a whole rank level!
