Johnny Mercer: Defence Minister Resigns

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
A Downing Street spokesperson said: "This evening the Prime Minister has accepted the resignation of Johnny Mercer as Minister for Defence People and Veterans.

"He thanks Johnny Mercer for his service as a Government Minister since 2019."

Will the armed forces miss him ?

He was a good man to have in that position.
Unfortunately, as the senior Govt politicians and other spineless individuals wouldn't support the case for protection for NI Vets; this, alongside driving the policy to reduce AF Personnel numbers, meant he was always fighting a losing battle.
I think he went showing personal integrity.
Sadly, those key points remain for the next (if any), incumbent.

Mercer is a grade A prat from start to finish, but he was the right person (out of the cast available) to be in that role. His resignation just goes to show what the Tories really think of the armed forces and veterans. If they cant line their own pockets out of something, they are not interested.
If you voted for that shower of sh1t.... well........................
You...right now.

We definitely need an independent, no constituent MP voted for by current and ex servicemen / women to sit on the serving government cabinet.

I've always thought resigning was a shit way to protest something when you are in a position to actually change something. It's akin to a toddlers tantrum. If I can't have it then you're not having me.

Surely staying on and fighting harder is what's actually needed from those with influence.

Easier said than done Cornish. When you have a "whispering" campaign behind your back and the odds are stacked against you then your position becomes seriously untenable and it can be a miserable place to work when you don't have the support of those above!! So by resigning he has seriously highlighted the issue while minimising his own stress levels!!!

Unfortunately, as the first duty of the elected government is to protect the citizens, then having a Defence Minister that has no affiliation to the political party in charge would put them at odds. The only way you'd get representation fromsomeone voted by the servicemen is if you had a union, and the Tories aint going to allow that!

Mercer, although an elected Tory, was about as independent as you could get, and it didnt work well for him.

The above points are true, but it appears he wanted to be in politics to make tough changes, the stress that comes with having to make hard decisions befalls all those in power. Once the issue is no longer being chased down by someone that cares then it quickly becomes a non issue.

No one likes a quitter.

It'll be back to vilifying alleged armed forces through the courts once again soon if this is forgotten about.

Lots of experts on here about how appalling he was. Nobody here That served in NI 30-50 years ago still being turned over.
Easy to sit in the high chair and bitch about someone who towed the line ( did you ever do that) but eventually give in. The CS are cancerous at level, and don’t do anything at all but keep the status quo.
For those that think his replacement brings anything new, you have a proud Guards Officer that let the whole army down.
