From www.thisisbristol.co.uk

“The car will be powered by a Eurojet EJ200 jet engine, which is used to power the new Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet and delivers 20,000lbs of thrust, and a Falcon hybrid rocket, which delivers 27,000lbs of thrust.”

Finally a good use for the Eurofighter!!!

SSC.jpg

1. Titanium or composite wheels - rear wheels sit outside bodywork, front wheels are steerable to comply with land speed rules
2. Driver sits behind front wheels and in front of engine air intake duct
3. Carbon fibre and titanium bodywork for optimum aerodynamic performance, reaching top speed over 4.5 miles. Same distance required for stopping
4. Bloodhound powered by Eurofighter jet engine with hybrid rocket attached, enabling car to accelerate from 0-1,050mph in 40 seconds
5. Fins maintain stability and downforce to keep car on the ground
6. Deployable aerostructures slow car at highest speeds; parachutes slow car at mid-speeds; finally, driver halts car with carbon fibre brakes

Well I heard that they had some intake issues, I hope they get them sorted and good luck to the team :PDT_Xtremez_27:

You think they should fit an Ejector seat in this one?

No they won't! Ejecting at zero feet / 760 MPH tends to kill people who have tried. It is an interesting design concept, similar to the SR53 jet/rocket plane of the 50's. It is also completely different to Thrust SSC's reversed wheel steering and double engined layout. No doubt the design has been CFD tested like its predecessor.

The drag issue that Thrust SSC came up on, plowing the Nevada desert up at Mach 1, will still be an problem on a salt flat. Wonder if they have worked out how much power they need to beat it?

It is also the start of a recession. This project, if it gets off the ground, will be a shoe string job, just like Thrust 1, 2 & SSC.

Why don't they get Richard Hammond to test drive it.....I hear he has some experience!
Or better still paint it red say it's Italian and even if it doesn't break the record, they will be able to appeal!

Its got an RAF Driver already who has got more experience in his little finger that Hammond has got, full stop.

Hammond hasn't done this

or this.

and hasn't hammonds wife banned him from dragsters anyway?

Looking at Richard Noble's site (HERE) , I like his 4 principles but point No. 4 looks like a bit of a get out clause :PDT_Xtremez_17:

These projects all started very small and being original in concept attract only very limited resource. So they have to obey the rules of small company survival:

Keep it very simple
Build a highly-motivated, small team
Move decisively and quickly
Make up for the financial deficiencies with a very high level of team motivation and productivity

However for all you TECHIE's here's how the engineering will produce the car. It looks as if there will be a job ro an arrmourer as he talks about changing a rocket engine at the end of the first run.

Several RAF Techies were heavily involved with SSC, especially ones with Spey experience. The EJ200 experience will also be wanted this time I bet. Mr Noble will no doubt be looking for such volunteers!

Are you saying that there are Techies already working with the Bloodhound or that they may be required?

I must admit i like this car, i hope they do go 1000mph+ and before the americans

Off Topic Richard Noble is a tremendous character. Exceptionally `posh`, you couldn`t fit another plum in his mouth when he`s talking, but he`s also very down to earth. He`ll chat with just about anyone.

We met him when he`d done the land speed record and was planning a bash at the water record. Needing a bit of kit for his boat, he`d contacted the MOD who put him in touch with us. So down he pops, with a letter to the effect that `all assistance...` etc etc. 10 mins with the Sengo, an hour in the crewroom/trade desks, then out the door with a starter for a RB211. I suppose it could be construed as a bit of an expensive chat, £125k for an hour, but back then we stuck to one war at a time.

Happy days.

Where they gonna drive it though? He stated the Nevada desert was a no go due to years of drought. Area 51 with it's 27 mile runway perhaps...:PDT_Xtremez_15::PDT_Xtremez_27::PDT_Xtremez_19:

Somewhere were the shockwave from the nose isn't going to plow up the track like Thrust SSC did to the Black Rock desert. It produced so much drag and turbulence that all the car's top speed peaked almost 100 MPH below design speed.

Their revised understanding of Transonic drag is going to make or break this project (oh, so is money too!)

They have had some aerodynamic issues however I understand that this was to do whith in take geometry as fro trasnsonic effects i have no idea

Er...not if you look at his last entry on Richard Noble's web site at number 4 on his list is;

1. Keep it very simple
2. Build a highly-motivated, small team
3. Move decisively and quickly
4. Make up for the financial deficiencies with a very high level of team motivation and productivity

..is that a case of belligerence overrides all ? :PDT_Xtremez_21:

Noble has had one or two major projects that haven't got off the drawing board (Atlantic Sprinter and the F1 aircraft) and while his aerospace adventures have been imaginative and bold, they have failed in production due to the lack of interest our finanical instituions and government really have towards manufacturing industy.

I hope they can get the funding from somebody or the general public to do it. Bringing Schools into the scene is a great idea as it will increase engineering awareness (the workshops that we used 25 years ago do not exist due to H&S, propably a good thing as most people were trying to burn them down!)

Problem also is that there is no competition that really exists. Steve Fossett (who had taken over Craig Breedlove's SOA project) died looking for a track and forget the "North American Eagle" (the converted Starfighter airframe!) as that car just wants to take off when it get to any serious speed!

Has that done any serious testing yet?

Atlantic Sprinter

Non stop 'Blue ribbon' Atlantic crossing speed boat, powered by a RB211 engine.

F1 aircraft

5 seat 'air taxi' aircraft, killed by the fact that the specification was illigal in Europe.

ARV Super 2 light aircraft.

Like the pratt who tried to weld two pieces of steel together with the gas pipes under the metal he was welding which I saw happen in a metal work class at school. Another kid saw what was happening and told him to watch out, only for the idoit with the welder to turn towards the other kid and say 'What', along with pointing the torch directly at the second kid's head, which resulted in his hair catching fire. Idoit's name just happened to be not that far of pratt as well.

I'd love to see what planet the 'Starfighter' lot are on. A Civve owned Starfighter currently holds the low level Air Speed record, and I think its just over 1000 MPH, well it does hold the record, but I think it later crashed.
