One way to do it would be to connect the Laptop Hard drive to a PC using this http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=1&criteria=usb&ModuleNo=28724&doy=search&C=SO&U=Strat15 copy data to PC HD, then back to the new laptop HD (by networking the laptop and PC). Probably the cheapest option anyway.

Failing that if they both have network ports, a crossover cable will join the two. Set the faster one as the master and remote access the other. If they both have USB, use a removable hard drive. That's the way I did it !

What???

What???

Firstly
Please tell me this is a joke?
A super duper TG4 computer whiz kid,
One of the chosen few who are going to smooth the transition to DII(F) and support our JPA terminals in the field.

The future of IT support in the RAF.

And you don't know how to get data off the hard drive.

I thank you for confirming my suspicions of how much trouble we are going to be in....

Anyway If you ARE serious you have many options
I would get one of the following

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&DOY=search&ModuleNo=48965&criteria=

or the encloseure as sugested.
or you could do the X-over cable as mentioned (but that may require some networking knowledge?)
or you could burn it to DVD, then you will have a backup (if the data is that important)
or you could print out all the data(porn?) and scan it into the new machine or email it to yourself (joke?)

or you could find an ex TG3 guy who likes his geeky stuff and they will do it for you and take the p!ss out of you while you wait.

Hope this helps?

Easier way still buy an external USB Case for the laptop drive about £7 and then you have a backup device as well.

BW,

Thats the way I did it. It works a treat, I now have a small portable hard drive that I can just plug into any USB socket and away we go....

Best £10 I ever spent.. (well that scaleywife spent in case she reads this!!)

thanks for confirming once again that techs can be as arrogant as they are ignorant
if the hard drive was in a working laptop i wouldn't have asked the question. the question was a fairly reasonable one i thought...how do i get the info off an old laptop hard drive (just the hard drive...not in a laptop) onto a new laptop.

You are being serious aren't you? We are all doomed......

Firstly get yourself one of the 2.5" enclosures if your drive is a decent size and is not on its way out.

Secondly...
Thank you for confirming once again you don't listen properly.
I don't want to turn this into a fight, I have my dinner to eat, my telepathic powers are getting weeker as I get older, and the first thing I suggested was similar to Major Geek and Billy wizz so calm down and read the post again.
I may have been a bit sarky but i gave you various solutions.
As I said last your IT section (I guess you are still in a COMCEN or on a helpdesk?) should have some form of caddy/USB to IDE cable you may be able to borrow? (don't break/ lose it)
And as I also suggest back it up from your new HDD ( I assume your new laptop has one although you didn't say so in your post:PDT_Xtremez_15: ) onto a DVD ( if it has a DVD writer)or two, to save the hasle next time.
Best of luck.....
