Hi guys, i am a first time poster, so hopefully i have the correct forum!
Im about to start RTC at halton on the 13th of may, and will be training to become an ASOp.
I have a quick question for you all: I do not currently hold a full driving license and was wondering whether the RAF will pay for me to do this on an intensive course of some kind, as i am aware they do this for certain job roles?
I asked at my local AFCO but they said they didn't know!?

Any advice would be fantastic, thanks!

You can do an RAF driving course if there is a Service need for you to do so. The only down side to this, is that you can be called upon at anytime to drive....

As you're joining as an ASOP, I personally can't see much need for you to be put on an RAF driving course, I may be wrong of course and I'm sure NotanIDOyet may be along soon with the definitive answer, but don't pin your hopes on it....

It is completely dependent on the post you will eventually be posted into upon completion of your training. However, I would say it be almost 90% unlikely that it will require a driver qualification, but you never know.

Any of the ASOp's on here should be able to clarify that point further.

I've been driving for about a year and a half, all courtesy of the RAF. I'm not sure how the eligability thing works now though. I think pre-JPA it used to depend on what post you were filling and whether or not you were required to drive car/motorbike/truck whatever. All I know is that my FS came to me one day and said that I was messing up his planner by being a non-driver and he was gonna get me on a course so I never really had the hassle of finding out if I was eligable, I just assume I must have been.

Thing is I could've been driving a few years earlier but never seemed to get round to putting in the paperwork, guess I was never really bothered about being a driver then but I'm so glad I learned now. When I eventually did, the whole process moved very quickly and I went from not even having a provisional to being a qualified driver in about 2 and half - 3 months.

I've heard some people have to go away to an actual military driving school where they will stay until they pass (is that true??) but I guess I was lucky 'cause I did it on my home camp. It was a week long but at the end the instructor wouldn't put me through for my test 'cause he said I needed more practice (I was horrendous) so I did another weeks training 2 weeks later and passed my test first time. Think you only get the two try's though then you have to sort yourself out so make sure you are prepared.

Well thats a shame because it would have saved me alot of time and money lol! The only reason i can think of is if i'm required to undertake airfield checks, but if my memory serves me correctly i remember seeing a video which showed Air Traffic Controllers doing that. Only time will tell as you say, but thanks for the info so far!
