Guys,

Been posted to an unusal post overseas, wanted it, loving it, but a little shocked how expensive certain basic items are.

I am married (SNCO) with one child and I receive a good rate of LOA, however due to JPA and my wages being totally cocked up, I am still a little bit lost to what my real income should be.

Is my LOA taxed, if it is and bearing in mind it is an allowance can I claim it back from the tax man.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

LOA is non-taxable. 11 months in to an overseas posting to a pretty unusual location, and the first 6 months were financially difficult due to the purchase of new cars, household basics, the lack of a credit rating (therefore, deposits were required for most utilities), and a loss of the no-claims bonus for car insurance. Loss of 1 household wage also made a big difference.

However, it has got a lot easier financially and we are now enjoying benefits of an overseas tour and the general consensus at this location is that this is the norm. Hopefully you will also begin to see the benfits to living in another country both financially and culturally (sounds a bit poncy, but I mean getting to travel, eating out etc etc).
