Hubby due back from sandpit in next couple of weeks, and we're wanting to take the little people up to see the Tower of London in half term. We live just an hour away so accommodation not required. Have heard queues there can be a nightmare (especially to see the Crown Jewels) so was wondering whether anyone can offer any advice?

I went there fairly recently, the queues for everything was minimal and this was on a Saturday.

It is definitely worth buying your ticket online before you go, that will save a bit of queuing. I remember it was £16 each for adults, not sure of the cost for the kids.

For the crown jewels, you travel past them on a moving walkway, so the throughput of people is fairly smooth. you can gho round as many times as you like, but you are not allowed to walk against the walkway.

Have a good visit :)

If your little people are girls the jewels are a must, if they are boys head to the White Tower for bllood and gore and executions.

A great day out!

Thank you all for the info. The little people are girls, 2 of whom will love the jewels and the other who will be quite happy to head to the white tower for the blood, gore and executions!

Assuming it still applies, your other half (Whole family?) should get an discount on entry with his 1250 (MoD90).

...all that and

GO EARLY! - get there for the opening time

A friend of mine (with a slightly suspect moral compass) always takes a set of crutches or wheelchair to Alton Towers etc. He gets put to the front of the queue. Might work at other UK tourist places.

Ok - so now we've decided to really push the boat out and stay overnight. I've been looking at the options available, but because it's half term and every other T, D & H is going there too, choices seem to be a little limited. Does anyone have any tips??

try lastmintue.com and look for the secret hotel section, if a hotels not full they often sell off the rooms cheap, you get a rough idea of where it is and the star rating and find out the exact hotel after you've booked, me and mrs fairy booked one in london for 80 quid it turned out to be opposite westminster over the river and should have been closer to 300 for the night:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Union Jack Club

If you are visiting london the UJ Club has been modernised and would put some 3 star hotels to shame.

Agree with that, I was working down there the other week and had to spend an additional night. Lastminute got me a fine room in the De Vere Devonport house for £75. Luxury for the price of a Travelodge. Slap bang in Greenwich.

Northwood/Northolt families room in the mess (depending upon entitlement ) short walks to the tube.

I stayed at the VSC once..... Never again. All very posh ownstairs, overpriced restaurant and bar. Go upstairs and it stinks of stale p1ss from the 'residents', very musky and VERY dated. It is also right on the main route to a major hospitals, so be prepared for a noisy night with blues and twos at all hours. Not worth the money IMHO. And dont even think about taking kids there, you will get looked down upon and treated with disdain. As I said........ NEVER AGAIN.

Definately worth getting on a Tower of London Tour. All 'Beafeaters' (don't call them that BTW) are ex-SNCO and put on a great show.

Other 3 are on youtube

Enjoy

Thanks for posting this, ^_^ Much appreciated. I went on a tour of our beautiful tower and grounds about 7 years ago, and the guide we had was just plain miserable, and clearly hated his job. >_< I'm now tempted to go again and see if I can find this guy.
