Basically guys looking for some advice on what to do with myself...

Been in the RAF now for just under 5 years, joined up at 17, and im now 22.

I was posted to RAF Wittering as a first posting, and now im on TSW, and have been for a few years.

Ive been OOA to Iraq, NI, Oman and im due an Afghanistan at the end of the year...

Basically im getting to the point where im thinking of pushing on with my service career, IE aircrew, Officer or perhaps a retrade. The problem being im not very decisive, and i dont really know where to turn.

There are plenty of opportunities out there, but i have no idea what the RAF expect of me in regards to Aircrew/Commission...

I have 10 GCSE A-C's. including English maths and science,

What jobs are out there?

Armourer! But you will have to eat a lump of your own sh1t at the AFCO before you will be accepted.

What do you want to do when you sit at work in your present job and daydream?

It's hard to advise you without knowing your aspirations...Do you yearn to pull on the green zipped suit of righteousness and go thrusting around the skies in whatever capacity or do you wish for greater responsibilty with your feet firmly on the ground, making decisions that people who you once worked with may not find popular...Can you handle peoples attitude to you changing once you start going up the ranks?

Dodgysootie and I worked and shared a house together and everything was fine until I crossed over to the aircrew world...Now he looks upon me as a god which I find off-putting...:PDT_Xtremez_17:

Best thing for you is to get out and about and visit the flying stations and talk to people who have been in similar situations, that might give you some idea of what you want to do. It's what i'd advise my lot.:PDT_Xtremez_40:

Im a stacker and roughly in the same patch you are in mate, about a year ago I went to Cranwell for aircrew introduction it all seems fine and dandy to just the off putting thing is that you are streamed lined into what they have available at the time like the RAF all over its where they need the man power. Maybe you need to get off the wing and try some supplier work I know a lad at Waddo that is interested in getting on the wing, well he were not too sure now. A change of scenery does the world of good.:PDT_Xtremez_32:

That is why there are JNCOs in the RAF to make decisions for you!

Now stop daydreaming, get off the computer & go & build some hoses in the shed!

You've reached the pinnacle of your career now, serving on TSW! :PDT_Xtremez_30:

firstly, there are loads of jobs, the main point is that if you're not sure then you need to start this off with a bit of self-critique, followed by some research.
Basically, what do you like doing? From the point of view of - Do you like fixing things or sorting things out? Secondly, has your stn got a 'commissioning club' or something similar. If it has then go along as they will be able to give you lots of guidence be it commission, NCO aircrew or remuster.
end of the day though, it will be your call, so do your homework and take you time chossing what route is right for you.

Have you thought of transferring to sunnier climes, Australia and New Zealand have Air forces, and are recruiting at the moment try it

Cheers for the replies guys,

im swaying more to the aircrew side of things, something like electronics operator.. still rather vague...

we dont have a commissioning club at stafford, not now its an army barracks!

Do you know anything about RNZAF recruiting ? The Innsworth RNZAF web site says nothing going at the moment.

Why not try further/higher education and get a couple of 'A' levels or a HNC for example. If you get day release this will break up the tedium of the week whilst enhancing your prospects for aircrew/ commissioning or remustering.

Are you undertaking any secondary duties? Whilst they give the opportunity to develop management skills they also demonstrate the capacity to do more than your current job.

Don't forget that PVR is also a viable alternative so have a look at the job market in civvy street to see if your aspirations are better satisfied out there.

Two ex TSW nutters have just joined as stackers with same rank, Sgt and Cpl. So every chance for you mere mortals.

Stop making excuses it never had one when it was still RAF. Why not try Cosford or Shawbury. Need to be a bit more decisive old chap, I know there are two ex TSW chaps who have taken Commission and Aircrew SHF in last 4 years for a fact. Funny watching one from the other side of re-fuel hose.
