Hello all! I hope I'm posting in the right section to begin with. I'm getting married this summer and have just been informed I need to have my banns read in my local parish as I'm getting married in the church in my fiancées village. I was wondering if anybody knew before I make a buffoon out of myself if I could just ring the Padre and sort it out that way?

Thankyou for your time!

IIRC no. You will have to get them read by the vicar marrying you both as you have been told in the parish you are getting married in.

I got married the first time when I was stationed at Marham. I had to have my banns read at the church on camp and also at the church where we were getting married. The rules are if you both live in different parishes then the banns are read in both parishes. If you are getting married in another parish to where either of you live then they need reading in that one as well so you could end up with them being read in 3 separate parishes! It's no easier with register offices either.

Your Banns should be read in YOUR home parish in order for the people who 'know' you to object if required!? If you have been away a while< I would recommend speaking to pardre.

Cheers for the responses...... a little more information might be prudent on my part next time...... Our banns are being read at my future wifes parish, which is where we are getting married. But I am not from the same parish and have been away from my "home" parish for about 8 years!

My Mrs had to move in with My sister while the Banns were read as one of us had to "reside" for the duration of the reading, 3 weeks I think and my Banns were rewad in the Parish church in Coningsby village.

The priest took one look at me and decided the bann reading just wasn't going to happen from my end of things so he let it slide...

Not big on church stuff I must admit...

Did he recommend a black mass instead?

Because I wasn't a left footer he just looked at me in 'that' way (Like someone who had just walked backwards into his sh1t hole of a bungalow, with 666 tatooed to the side of his head and a voodoo doll sticking out his shirt top pocket)...and he smelt.

Just for some future infomation in case anybody else has a similar query in the future:

Your friendly camp padre WILL read your marraige banns at camp and it will cost you the princely sum of 32 pounds. 21 for the banns being read and 11 for a certificate afterwards (a standard set by law).

However, after speaking to his secretary, locating the padre at my particular camp is a task rivalling in difficulty to actually getting married..... he's never around!

I too am getting married soon, in a different parish to that in which we live. Banns to be read in church where wedding will take place, and I went to see the vicar in my local parish just the other night. Incidentally, he's only charging me £25 which makes me feel like i'm getting it cheap (after reading the previous response).

Slightly Off Topic but if you are hitched in a registrars and don't live in the same area, there is a notice to marry put up in the place of marriage and one needs to be put up in the partners place of residence (nearest registrars office). Costs 30 Blats north of the border if marrying south, and you are issued with a CONI (Certificate Of No Impediment) valid for 3 months which must go to the registrar at the place of marriage at least 2 weeks before you sign your life away.
