Hi, am a mature female medical student hoping to join the RAF but just having few doubts about whether should join RAF or Army (its difficult to know the differences without experiencing either of them for your self). Has any one got any advice to help me out? I will owe about 8 years commitment if I join now so its a big commitment for me. Thanks.

Having worn Blue full time and Green part time I would advise you to go Blue. In all honesty as a medical type you will be subject to very similar employment conditions in both when on deployment but the RAF wins hands down on treatment of it's people when on a home posting.

Hope this helps!

May I suggest you contact one of the RAF Aux Units and speak to the Adj. I am sure they would be delighted to host you and afford the opportunity to speak to the Doctors therein. Good luck. Oh and we are nicer by far than the Army!

Speak to the appropriate medical recruiting offices at both. I have a feeling the Army are not taking on many doctors at the moment, certainly not direct entry anyway. If you are looking for a cadetship, things may be different.

Aeromed Duties

Aeromed Duties

If your going for Medical cadetship, then there is on opportunity to fly with UAS in your spare time ans force developemt activities. Maybe SERE IOT the army and RN may do that too.

But once your trained I think you will have an opportunity to do rotary and large fixed wing aero med and casivac duties from you know where and other places. You would definitely (sadly) be earning your pennies then.

If you like badges, join the army. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

And of course speak with the AFCO (RAF) Staff. They WILL HAVE all the latest gen.

Thanks everyone for replies, your input is appreciated. I have been in to AFCO today. Cheers

It also depends what speciality you want when you qualify as a doc. If it's GP or anaesthesia then definitely the RAF, but for things like Emergency Medicine then the Army have more opportunities (althought the RAF are now training in EM it's only a few vacancies)
