I have about 1ltr of mineral oil hanging about the shed and I need to top up my old banger but it uses non mineral oil. Is it OK to mix mineral and non-mineral oils in an engine?

If its meant to use non-mineral oil then put non-mineral oil in. For the sake of 1L its not worth taking a chance.
Its possible that the two oils wont mix but will instead form an emulsion which won't give your engine the protection it needs.

I am with him. The older the carthorse the better the feed needs to be.

Go fully 100% non-mineral (i.e. synthetic) every time. better still - change it.

Mineral and synthetic don't mix! It clumps and goes lumpy and almost like when oil gets water in it, it goes cloudy.
