The missus "M" reg Mondeo has a horrible vibration that starts at 30 MPH and really kicks in at 55- 60 MPH. It feels like it is coming from the front and includes a side to side wobble. Tyres have been checked for distortion and have been balanced. Suspension seems OK and brake discs are not warped / uneven.

Can anyone sugest any thing other than a CV joint and if it is one, the clue to telling me which one it is!

CV joint problems often manifest themselves as a graunching or clicking noise when the wheel is turned fully one way. I recall from the back of my mind that if you turn the wheel left and get a clicking sound it is the right-hand CV joint that is suspect and vice-versa.
However, causing vibration? I'm not so sure. Have you checked all of the bushes and joints? What about the steering rack, is steering positive and noise free?

Wheel bearing
I had a wheel bearing go and it caused a wheel wobble

Wheel bearings are typically located right at the spindle of the wheel hub to allow free wheel movement. By minimizing the friction that goes with metal to metal surface contacts as your car rotates, the functionality of the part is crucial to the overall performance of your vehicle. Keeping the part periodically greased or re-packed every two years, which is equivalent to 24,000-mile service, is essential to keep it in top notch working conditions. Proper greasing could also facilitate efficient flushing mechanisms to do away with any form of contaminants which can induce wearing and corrosion. Once the part fails, find immediate replacement for your wheel will not run properly without working sets of wheel bearings. To establish strength and rigidity, the part is crafted from high grade and durable metal alloy constructions to have better resistance to heat, pressure, and wearing. Investing with premium and high grade wheel bearing replacements could instantly restore or 0 re-establish the handling features of your vehicle.

HWDR is probably correct in my opinion. To check your wheel bearings, grab hold of the top of the front wheel and try and push/pull it. If you can feel ANY slack or knocking noise, it's probably the fault (excluding track rod ends of course).
If you end up getting them changed, make sure you have BOTH front wheel bearings replaced at the same time.

If its the wheel bearings then it only takes about 20min per wheel, but thats only if the races are in good order, on most cars they are pressed in so there is no chance of getting them out, but the bearing will just pop out.

It will be a quick and cheap way to check if thats the cause of the problem.

Just had a rear wheel bearing replaced on my mondeo, quick but not cheap as its part of a sealed unit, cost over £110 (ouch!). Might be different for you as mine is a later model. Edited to say £110 for the bit, cost of labour on top of that.

Had the tracking done ? Even though the wheels are balanced etc , the tracking can be off and cause symptoms similar. Hit a kerb recently ?

Don't discount unusually worn tyres as well, they have been able to cause a lovely judder in my father's Merc when they wore oval somehow. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

You also don't want a wheel bearing to completely fail and weld itself to the hub shaft. That's scary when you're doing anything above a crawl. :PDT_Xtremez_09:

Another thought is to have a look at the front driveshafts? These like most/all propshafts are balanced, and if the weight has fallen off then it would upset the balance.

We're talking about resonant frequencies here. If the wheel is balanced the only other source of misalignment / balance is the bearing.

The other less likely cause could be the damper in the shock absorber assembly. (Although I would consider it an outsider).

Edit:

Removed 'beer driven' comments on mechanics and acceleration. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

Had a look at the driveshafts. OS one is rotating fine. NS seems to be rocking the gearbox as it rotates. Possibly the bearing of the inner CV breaking down!?:PDT_Xtremez_42:

In that case, get yer wallet out!

I was going to suggest checking your tyre wear pattern. If a wheel is balanced incorrectly or even knocked out of shape it can cause the symptoms you described at the top of the thread.

And I did.. At Mondeopart (a liitle indy place that deals only with Ford Eurocars).

40 quid (wasn't buying a new one!). Fitted it myself and vibration has gone!:PDT_Xtremez_19: :PDT_Xtremez_19:

Old one has gone to the same place as Kimi's rear suspension!

End of thread one thinks!
