Hopefully someone will have an answer to settle a constantly reoccurring office argument once and for all…

If a non-commissioned serviceman/servicewoman was to suddenly acquire a lot of money by inheritance or lottery win would they be told to go for their commission?

I’m sure everyone has been told this rumour in some form or another; but surely its not actually true is it?

It's nonsense, this dates back to when you could buy a commission, look at the scabby SAC picking his nose and eating it tomorrow morning and ask yourself if he would even get through the gate at Cranwell.

...there are a lot worse that have graduated successfully from the 'centre of excellence'.

I'm guessing it might help a bit, but wouldn't be a guarenteed thing.

But ask yourself... "If I won 10 million tomorrow, would I still be willing to be d1cked around 24/7, or stand on the gate at 3 am in the rain?"

You'd be out of there like a shot.

Utter b0llocks...The only way he would get to be commissioned is if he had the correct qualifications or equivelents in service terms, pass the relevent medical and physical hurdles and applt for it....Then he would have to pass OASC and IOT....If he did not do all that he would not earn the same credibility as his peers...this make make him a joke to them and to himself.

If I had won the lottery (5m for example) the last thing on Gods good earth I would be considering is staying in!

Like a SERE entrant you mean?

I understand those to be padres, doctors and dentists? (SERE means something entirely different to me!)

If so then lets face it...These are professional entrants that you go to for very specific advice that outside of their professional area you proabably wouldn't want or need to put them in charge of a box of crayons...

They are where they are due to professional qualifications and training...not because they won a lot of money.

So how low would you go? I'm sure some of us can remember back in the 90's during Tranche 1 and Tranche 2, people were almost breaking their necks to get out with an extra few 000's.

£5M ... Hmmm ... invested in a rock solid, rich-man only, scheme would generate about £250k per annum ...

During TA call up at Chillwell one trooper arived in an Aston Martin and promtly put in a wage claim of £90k plus
One trooper in Iraq was supposed to be on more than the C.O.

I served with the house hold cavalry where millionaire officers are ten a penny so some rich people don't mind working at 03:00 and getting **** wet through

I always thought the problem was that the C.O. would never be in the position to hit you with a large fine

About 250k...That would pay off the mortgage and a few sundries and I'd beg or go on the rob for the rest...
